About the product

Zestril 5 Mg Tablets

Description:

Zestril 5 mg tablets are a prescription antihypertensive medicine containing lisinopril, an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ace) inhibitor used to lower high blood pressure and protect the heart and kidneys. By blocking the conversion of angiotensin i to angiotensin ii, Zestril helps relax and widen blood vessels, reduce total peripheral resistance, and decrease aldosterone-mediated sodium and water retention. This results in a sustained reduction in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure without significantly affecting cardiac output or vital organ blood flow. Zestril 5 mg is commonly used as part of long-term cardiovascular risk management in adults under medical supervision.

Indications:

  • Treatment of essential (primary) hypertension in adults.
  • Treatment of renovascular, accelerated, and malignant hypertension (as directed by a specialist).
  • Management of heart failure, usually in combination with other medications such as diuretics or beta-blockers (as prescribed by a doctor).
  • Short- and long-term treatment after acute myocardial infarction to improve survival and reduce the risk of further cardiac events (under hospital or specialist supervision).
  • Management of diabetic nephropathy and protection of kidney function in certain patients with hypertension and diabetes (as advised by a physician).
  • Reduction of cardiovascular risk in high-risk hypertensive patients when used as part of a comprehensive treatment plan including lifestyle changes.

Active Ingredients / Key Components:

  • Lisinopril dihydrate equivalent to lisinopril 5 mg per tablet.
  • Excipients: Other inactive ingredients (tablet core and coating) are present but specific excipient names and concentrations , please check the product leaflet or the manufacturer’s official website. Refer to the official package leaflet for the full excipient list.

Dosage & Administration / How to Use:

  • Use Zestril 5 mg tablets exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not change the dose or stop treatment without medical advice.
  • General dosing for hypertension (adults): The usual starting dose is often 5–10 mg once daily, adjusted by the physician according to blood pressure response. Zestril 5 mg may be used as a starting dose or as part of a titration schedule. Maximum daily dose is usually up to 80 mg, as determined by the doctor.
  • Heart failure: Treatment is usually started with a low dose (often 2.5–5 mg once daily) and slowly increased under close medical supervision based on tolerance and clinical response.
  • Post–myocardial infarction: Therapy is initiated in hospital under specialist supervision with low doses, then titrated. Follow the exact regimen provided by your cardiologist.
  • Renal impairment / elderly patients: Lower starting doses and slower dose titration may be required. Your doctor will adjust the dose based on kidney function (creatinine clearance) and clinical status.
  • Tablets are taken orally once daily, at the same time each day, with or without food, swallowed with a glass of water. Do not chew or crush unless advised.
  • If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless it is almost time for the next dose. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed tablet.
  • Regular monitoring of blood pressure, kidney function, and serum electrolytes (especially potassium) is recommended during treatment.

Clinical Benefits:

  • Effectively lowers high blood pressure by dilating arterioles and reducing total peripheral resistance, helping to reduce the risk of stroke and heart attack.
  • Decreases aldosterone secretion, limiting sodium and water retention, which supports better blood pressure control and reduces strain on the heart.
  • Provides cardiovascular protection in patients with heart failure and after myocardial infarction by improving hemodynamics and reducing afterload.
  • Helps protect kidney function in certain hypertensive and diabetic patients by improving renal perfusion and reducing intraglomerular pressure.
  • Maintains renal, cerebral, and coronary blood flow while lowering blood pressure, minimizing the risk of compromised organ perfusion.
  • Has minimal effect on cardiac output and cardiovascular reflexes, with relatively low risk of postural hypotension compared with some other antihypertensives.

Warnings & Contraindications:

  • Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to lisinopril, other ace inhibitors, or any component of the tablet.
  • Contraindicated in patients with a history of angioedema related to previous ace inhibitor therapy or hereditary/idiopathic angioedema.
  • Contraindicated during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy; use in the first trimester is not recommended. Ace inhibitors can cause serious harm to the fetus.
  • Do not use in patients with severe renal artery stenosis (especially bilateral) without strict specialist supervision.
  • Use with caution in patients with renal impairment, dehydration, volume depletion, heart failure, or those on high-dose diuretics, as marked hypotension may occur.
  • Use with caution in patients with liver disease, collagen vascular disease, or those receiving drugs that may affect blood counts (risk of neutropenia/agranulocytosis).
  • Monitor potassium levels if used with potassium-sparing diuretics, potassium supplements, or salt substitutes containing potassium due to risk of hyperkalemia.
  • May interact with diuretics, other antihypertensives, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (nsaids), lithium, and certain antidiabetic medicines. Inform your doctor about all medications you are taking.
  • Avoid alcohol or limit intake, as it may enhance the blood pressure–lowering effect and increase dizziness or fainting.
  • Consult your doctor before use if pregnant, planning pregnancy, nursing, taking other medications, or if you have kidney disease, liver disease, diabetes, heart failure, history of angioedema, or severe dehydration.
  • Not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease without proper medical supervision; it is a prescription-only medicine that must be used under a doctor’s guidance.
  • Keep out of reach of children.

Side Effects:
  • Common side effects: Dizziness, headache, fatigue, cough (persistent dry cough), low blood pressure (especially after the first dose), nausea, or diarrhea.
  • Less common side effects: Rash, itching, changes in taste, muscle cramps, or mild kidney function changes (reflected in blood tests).
  • Serious side effects (seek immediate medical attention): Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat (angioedema), severe dizziness or fainting, difficulty breathing, chest pain, markedly decreased urine output, or signs of high potassium such as muscle weakness or irregular heartbeat.
  • If you experience any unusual or persistent symptoms, contact your doctor or pharmacist promptly.
