AZITHROMYCIN – AUG PHARMA 500MG 6TAB

Description:

AZITHROMYCIN – AUG PHARMA 500mg 6TAB is a prescription oral antibiotic medicine from AUG PHARMA containing azithromycin, a semi-synthetic macrolide of the azalide class. It is used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections, particularly of the respiratory tract, skin and soft tissues, and certain sexually transmitted infections. Azithromycin works by binding to the 50s subunit of bacterial ribosomes, inhibiting RNA-dependent protein synthesis and stopping bacterial growth. Each pack contains 6 film-coated tablets, each with 500mg azithromycin, suitable for adults as directed by a physician.

Indications:

  • Treatment of respiratory tract infections (such as bronchitis, community-acquired pneumonia, pharyngitis, and tonsillitis) caused by susceptible bacteria.
  • Treatment of skin and soft tissue infections (such as uncomplicated skin infections, cellulitis, and infected dermatoses) caused by susceptible organisms.
  • Treatment of typhoid fever (enteric fever) as part of appropriate antibiotic therapy, as directed by a physician.
  • Treatment of uncomplicated gonorrhoea (as a single-dose regimen) according to physician guidance and local treatment protocols.
  • Treatment of granuloma inguinale (donovanosis) until complete healing of lesions, as prescribed.
  • Treatment of chancroid and chlamydial urethritis (including non-gonococcal urethritis) as a single-dose regimen where indicated.
  • Prophylaxis of disseminated Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) infections in at-risk patients (e.g., advanced HIV infection) as part of a comprehensive regimen.
  • Treatment or secondary prophylaxis of MAC infections in combination with other antimycobacterial agents, as directed by a specialist.
  • Other infections caused by azithromycin-susceptible organisms, according to physician judgment and local guidelines.

Active Ingredients / Key Components:

  • Azithromycin – 500mg per film-coated tablet.
  • Excipients: The full list of inactive ingredients (tablet core and coating components, such as fillers, binders, and colorants) is not specified in the available information (For full ingredient information, please check the product leaflet or the manufacturer’s official website.). Please refer to the package leaflet for complete excipient details.

Dosage & Administration / How to Use:

  • This medicine must be used exactly as prescribed by a doctor. Do not self-medicate or adjust the dose without medical advice.
  • Route of administration: Oral (by mouth). Swallow the film-coated tablet whole with a glass of water. Do not crush or chew.
  • With or without food: Azithromycin can generally be taken with or without food. If stomach upset occurs, taking it after food may help. Follow your doctor’s instructions.
  • Typical adult dosing examples (for guidance only; always follow your doctor’s specific regimen):
  • Respiratory tract, skin and soft tissue infections (adults): 500mg once daily for 3 days or 500mg on day 1 followed by 250mg once daily on days 2 to 5.
  • Typhoid fever (adults): 500mg once daily for 7 days, or as directed by the treating physician.
  • Uncomplicated gonorrhoea (adults): 2g (2000mg) as a single oral dose, usually under medical supervision.
  • Granuloma inguinale: Initial dose 1g (1000mg) on day 1, then 500mg once daily until all lesions have completely healed, as advised by the physician.
  • Chancroid / chlamydial urethritis: 1g (1000mg) as a single oral dose, according to medical guidance.
  • Prophylaxis of disseminated MAC infections: 1.2g (1200mg) once weekly, as part of a prophylactic regimen in high-risk patients.
  • Treatment or secondary prophylaxis of MAC: 500mg once daily in combination with other antimycobacterial drugs, as directed by a specialist.
  • Missed dose: If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless it is nearly time for your next dose. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed dose.
  • Duration of treatment: Complete the full course prescribed, even if symptoms improve earlier, to reduce the risk of treatment failure and antibiotic resistance.
  • Not recommended for children in this 500mg tablet strength unless specifically prescribed by a pediatric specialist.

Clinical Benefits:

  • Broad-spectrum antibacterial activity against many common respiratory, skin, and genital pathogens, helping to resolve infection effectively.
  • Convenient once-daily dosing and relatively short treatment courses, which may improve patient adherence compared to some other antibiotics.
  • Long elimination half-life (approximately 68 hours) allows sustained tissue concentrations, supporting continued antibacterial effect after dosing.
  • Useful in the management and prophylaxis of opportunistic Mycobacterium avium complex infections in high-risk patients under specialist supervision.
  • Film-coated tablet form for easier swallowing and accurate dosing.

Warnings & Contraindications:

  • Use only under medical supervision. Azithromycin is a prescription antibiotic and should not be used without a doctor’s evaluation and prescription.
  • Contraindications: Known hypersensitivity or allergy to azithromycin, other macrolide or ketolide antibiotics (e.g., erythromycin, clarithromycin), or any component of the formulation.
  • Use with caution in patients with pre-existing liver disease or hepatic impairment, as azithromycin is primarily eliminated by the liver. Liver function monitoring may be required.
  • Use with caution in patients with kidney impairment, significant heart disease, or known prolongation of the QT interval, or those taking other medicines that can prolong QT interval (risk of arrhythmias).
  • May cause Clostridioides difficile-associated diarrhea; if severe, persistent, or bloody diarrhea occurs, stop the medicine and seek medical attention immediately.
  • Antibiotic use should be guided by local resistance patterns and culture/sensitivity results when available, to reduce the risk of antibiotic resistance.
  • Consult your doctor before use if pregnant or planning pregnancy. Azithromycin should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed and prescribed.
  • Consult your doctor before use if breastfeeding. Azithromycin passes into breast milk; benefits and risks should be assessed by the physician.
  • Inform your doctor about all other medicines you are taking, especially antiarrhythmics, anticoagulants (e.g., warfarin), digoxin, ergot derivatives, and other QT-prolonging drugs, to avoid interactions.
  • Do not use azithromycin to treat viral infections such as the common cold or influenza.
  • Not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease without appropriate medical supervision.
  • Keep out of reach of children.

Side Effects:
  • Common side effects: Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, flatulence, indigestion, and mild headache. These are usually temporary and mild to moderate.
  • Less common side effects: Dizziness, fatigue, changes in taste, mild skin rash, or itching.
  • Serious side effects (seek immediate medical attention): Severe allergic reactions (swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat; difficulty breathing; severe rash or blistering), severe or persistent diarrhea, jaundice (yellowing of skin or eyes), dark urine, severe abdominal pain, palpitations, fainting, or signs of heart rhythm disturbance.
  • If any side effects become severe, persistent, or worrying, stop the medicine and contact your doctor or pharmacist promptly.
