Duricef 250 Mg Suspension
Description:
Duricef 250 mg Suspension is an oral prescription antibiotic medicine containing cefadroxil, a first-generation cephalosporin. It is used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections in adults and children, particularly infections of the throat, urinary tract, skin, soft tissues, and middle ear. As a systemic antibiotic, Duricef works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to the destruction of susceptible bacteria and helping relieve infection-related symptoms such as pain, fever, and inflammation. It is not effective against viral infections such as the common cold or flu.
Indications:
- Treatment of urinary tract infections (UTIs), including cystitis and pyelonephritis caused by susceptible organisms.
- Treatment of tonsillitis and pharyngitis, including infections due to Streptococcus pyogenes (group A beta-hemolytic streptococci).
- Treatment of skin and soft tissue infections such as cellulitis, impetigo, and wound infections caused by susceptible bacteria.
- Treatment of otitis media (middle ear infections) caused by susceptible organisms.
- Management of other infections as directed by a physician where cefadroxil is considered appropriate.
Active Ingredients / Key Components:
- Cefadroxil – 250 mg per 5 ml oral suspension (concentration commonly used for Duricef suspension; exact concentration may vary by manufacturer and pack, please check the product label for confirmation).
- Excipients: May include sucrose or other sweeteners, suspending agents, flavoring agents, and preservatives – detailed excipient list and concentrations , please check the product leaflet or the manufacturer’s official website. Please refer to the package insert for full composition.
Dosage & Administration / How to Use:
- Use only as prescribed by a physician. Dosage depends on the type and severity of infection, patient age, body weight, and kidney function.
- Adults: Typical total daily dose for many infections ranges from 1 g to 2 g per day of cefadroxil, given in one or two divided doses. For mild to moderate infections, lower doses may be used. Exact dosing must be determined by the doctor.
- Children: The usual pediatric dose is based on body weight (mg/kg/day) divided into one or two doses per day. The doctor will calculate the appropriate dose and frequency.
- Shake the bottle well before each use to ensure the suspension is evenly mixed.
- Measure the dose accurately using the provided measuring spoon or oral syringe, not a household spoon.
- Can be taken with or without food. Taking with food may help reduce potential stomach upset.
- Take at evenly spaced intervals (e.g., every 12 or 24 hours) to maintain effective antibiotic levels in the blood.
- Complete the full course of therapy exactly as prescribed, even if symptoms improve earlier, to prevent relapse and antibiotic resistance.
- If a dose is missed, take it as soon as remembered unless it is almost time for the next dose. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one.
Clinical Benefits:
- Provides effective treatment for a broad range of bacterial infections, including urinary tract, respiratory, skin, and ear infections.
- Helps relieve infection-related symptoms such as sore throat, painful urination, ear pain, redness, and swelling by eliminating susceptible bacteria.
- First-generation cephalosporin with well-established safety and efficacy profile in both adults and children when used as directed.
- Oral suspension form is suitable for patients who have difficulty swallowing capsules or tablets, especially children and elderly patients.
Warnings & Contraindications:
- Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to cefadroxil, other cephalosporins, or any component of the formulation.
- Use with extreme caution in patients with a history of severe hypersensitivity (e.g., anaphylaxis) to penicillins or other beta-lactam antibiotics due to possible cross-sensitivity.
- Contraindicated in patients with porphyria and in certain neuromuscular disorders as noted for cefadroxil; use only under strict medical supervision in such conditions.
- Adjust dose and monitor carefully in patients with renal impairment, as cefadroxil is primarily excreted by the kidneys.
- Prolonged use may result in overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms, including fungi; if superinfection occurs, appropriate therapy should be instituted.
- Clostridioides difficile–associated diarrhea (CDAD) has been reported with nearly all antibacterial agents; consider this diagnosis in patients who develop diarrhea following antibiotic use.
- Consult your doctor before use if pregnant or planning pregnancy. Cefadroxil should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed and prescribed by a physician.
- Consult your doctor before use if breastfeeding; cefadroxil may be excreted in breast milk.
- Inform your doctor about all other medications and supplements you are taking, especially other antibiotics, anticoagulants, or nephrotoxic drugs.
- Not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease without medical supervision; it is a prescription antibiotic for bacterial infections only.
- Keep out of reach of children. Use only under medical supervision and do not share this medication with others.
Side Effects:
- Common side effects may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, indigestion, and mild skin rash.
- Allergic reactions can occur, ranging from mild rash, itching, or urticaria to severe reactions such as angioedema, difficulty breathing, or anaphylaxis. Seek immediate medical attention if signs of severe allergy appear.
- Rarely, antibiotic-associated colitis (including C. difficile–associated diarrhea) may occur, presenting with persistent or severe diarrhea, abdominal cramps, or blood/mucus in stool. Stop the medication and contact a doctor immediately if these occur.
- Other possible side effects include headache, dizziness, fatigue, changes in blood counts, or liver/kidney function test abnormalities. These are generally reversible after discontinuation.
- If any side effect is severe, persistent, or concerning, or if you notice any unusual symptoms, contact your healthcare provider promptly.
Storage Instructions:
Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Keep container tightly closed. Keep out of reach of children. After reconstitution (when water is added to the powder to make the suspension), store the suspension as directed on the label, usually in a refrigerator at 2–8 °c, and use within the period specified by the manufacturer (commonly 7–14 days). Do not freeze. Discard any unused suspension after the recommended period.
