Eltroxin 50 Mcg 100 Tablets
Description:
Eltroxin 50 mcg 100 tablets is a prescription thyroid hormone replacement medicine containing levothyroxine sodium. It is used to treat and manage hypothyroidism and other thyroid hormone deficiency states by replacing or supplementing the natural thyroxine (t4) produced by the thyroid gland. By restoring normal thyroid hormone levels, Eltroxin helps improve metabolism, energy levels, and overall endocrine balance. This product is intended for adult and pediatric patients as directed by a physician and must be used under strict medical supervision.
Indications:
- Treatment of hypothyroidism of any cause (primary, secondary, or tertiary), including congenital or acquired hypothyroidism.
- Management of goiter (enlarged thyroid gland), including simple (non-toxic) goiter.
- Treatment of chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis (Hashimoto’s thyroiditis) associated with thyroid hormone deficiency.
- Adjunctive therapy in the management of myxedema coma and myxedema stupor (severe, life-threatening hypothyroidism), usually in a hospital setting.
- Prevention of recurrence of goiter after surgical removal or radioiodine therapy when thyroid hormone replacement is indicated.
- Supportive therapy in patients requiring thyroid hormone suppression of thyroid-stimulating hormone (tsh) as directed by a specialist.
- Relief of symptoms associated with low thyroid hormone levels such as fatigue, weight gain, cold intolerance, dry skin, constipation, and slowed heart rate, when confirmed as due to hypothyroidism.
Active Ingredients / Key Components:
- Levothyroxine sodium – 50 mcg per tablet.
- Excipients (tablet base, fillers, binders, colorants, and preservatives) – exact composition and concentrations , please check the product leaflet or the manufacturer’s official website; please refer to the package insert for full details.
Dosage & Administration / How to Use:
- Eltroxin 50 mcg tablets must be used exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Dosage is individualized based on age, body weight, clinical condition, laboratory tests (tsh, t4), and response to treatment.
- Usual administration: take the tablet once daily on an empty stomach, preferably in the morning, at least 30–60 minutes before breakfast with a full glass of water.
- Swallow the tablet whole; do not crush or chew unless your doctor or pharmacist instructs otherwise. For infants or small children, the tablet may be crushed and mixed with a small amount of water and given immediately, as directed by a pediatrician.
- Do not take Eltroxin with foods or supplements that interfere with absorption (such as soy products, high-fiber meals, iron, calcium, or antacids containing aluminum or magnesium) within 4 hours of the dose, unless advised differently by your doctor.
- If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember on the same day. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular schedule. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one.
- Treatment with levothyroxine is usually long-term or lifelong in chronic hypothyroidism. Do not stop taking this medicine without consulting your doctor, even if you feel better.
- Regular monitoring of thyroid function tests (tsh, free t4) is essential to adjust the dose and ensure safe and effective therapy.
Clinical Benefits:
- Restores normal thyroid hormone levels in patients with hypothyroidism, helping to correct hormonal imbalance.
- Improves metabolism and energy levels, reducing symptoms such as fatigue, lethargy, and weight gain associated with low thyroid function.
- Supports healthy cardiovascular and nervous system function by normalizing thyroid hormone activity.
- Helps reduce goiter size and prevents further thyroid enlargement when used as directed.
- Improves skin, hair, and general well-being by correcting thyroid hormone deficiency.
- Provides essential hormone replacement in severe conditions such as myxedema coma and stupor (under specialist supervision).
Warnings & Contraindications:
- Eltroxin (levothyroxine) is a potent thyroid hormone and must not be used for weight loss in patients with normal thyroid function. High doses may cause serious or life-threatening side effects.
- Contraindicated in untreated thyrotoxicosis (overactive thyroid) and in patients with acute myocardial infarction, acute myocarditis, or acute pancarditis, unless specifically directed by a specialist.
- Use with extreme caution in patients with cardiovascular disease (such as coronary artery disease, angina, arrhythmias, hypertension) and in elderly patients; dose adjustments and close monitoring are required.
- Consult your doctor before use if pregnant or breastfeeding. Levothyroxine is generally considered safe and is often required during pregnancy, but dose modification and regular thyroid function monitoring are essential.
- Inform your doctor if you have adrenal insufficiency, diabetes mellitus, pituitary disorders, or any other serious medical condition, as dose adjustments and additional treatments may be needed.
- Many medicines and supplements interact with levothyroxine (e.g., iron, calcium, antacids, cholesterol-lowering resins, certain antidepressants, anticonvulsants, and blood thinners). Always inform your doctor and pharmacist about all medications and supplements you are taking.
- Not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease without proper medical evaluation and prescription.
- Keep out of reach of children. Accidental ingestion, especially by children, may cause serious harm and requires immediate medical attention.
- Do not change the brand or dose of levothyroxine without consulting your doctor, as different products may vary in bioavailability.
Side Effects:
- When dosed correctly, Eltroxin is usually well tolerated. Side effects are most often due to overdose or excessive sensitivity, leading to symptoms of hyperthyroidism.
- Common signs of excessive dose may include palpitations, rapid heartbeat, chest pain, nervousness, irritability, tremor, insomnia, headache, sweating, heat intolerance, weight loss, diarrhea, and menstrual irregularities.
- Less common effects can include muscle weakness, cramps, hair loss (usually temporary at the start of treatment), and changes in appetite.
- Serious side effects such as severe chest pain, shortness of breath, fainting, severe rapid or irregular heartbeat, or signs of allergic reaction (rash, itching, swelling of face or throat, severe dizziness, difficulty breathing) require immediate medical attention.
- If you experience any persistent or bothersome symptoms, or if you suspect your dose may be too high or too low, contact your doctor for evaluation and possible dose adjustment.
