Empagliform 5/1000 Mg 30 Tabs
Description:
Empagliform 5/1000 mg 30 tabs is a prescription oral antidiabetic medicine used to help control blood glucose levels in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. It combines two active ingredients, empagliflozin (an SGLT2 inhibitor) and metformin (a biguanide), to improve glycemic control when used together with a proper diet and regular exercise. Empagliform is also indicated to reduce the risk of cardiovascular death in adults with type 2 diabetes and established cardiovascular disease. It is not indicated for type 1 diabetes or for the treatment of diabetic ketoacidosis.
Indications:
- Management of blood glucose levels in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus, as an adjunct to diet and exercise.
- May be used as monotherapy (when metformin alone is not appropriate) or in combination with other antidiabetic medications (such as insulin, sulfonylureas, DPP-4 inhibitors, etc.) as prescribed by a physician.
- Reduction of the risk of cardiovascular death in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus and known cardiovascular disease.
- Helps reduce elevated fasting and postprandial (after-meal) blood sugar levels and improve overall glycemic control.
Active Ingredients / Key Components:
- Empagliflozin – 5 mg per film-coated tablet (sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitor).
- Metformin hydrochloride – 1000 mg per film-coated tablet (biguanide class oral antidiabetic).
- Other excipients: Film-coating and tablet core excipients (full excipient list is not available in the provided information).
Dosage & Administration / How to Use:
- Use only as prescribed by your physician. The dose and duration are individualized based on blood glucose control, kidney function, and concomitant medications.
- Typical regimen: One tablet taken once or twice daily as directed by the doctor. Do not exceed the prescribed dose.
- Tablets should generally be taken with meals to reduce gastrointestinal side effects associated with metformin (such as nausea and stomach upset), unless your doctor advises otherwise.
- Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water. Do not crush, break, or chew the film-coated tablets.
- If a dose is missed, take it as soon as you remember unless it is almost time for the next dose. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed dose.
- Regular monitoring of blood glucose, kidney function, and other laboratory parameters is recommended during treatment.
- Not recommended for children and adolescents under 18 years of age.
- Always follow your doctor’s instructions regarding diet, exercise, and concurrent use of other antidiabetic medicines.
Clinical Benefits:
- Provides dual mechanism of action: empagliflozin increases urinary glucose excretion, while metformin reduces hepatic glucose production and improves insulin sensitivity.
- Helps lower fasting and postprandial blood glucose levels, contributing to improved HbA1c control in type 2 diabetes.
- Supports weight management in many patients due to increased glucose loss in urine (caloric loss) associated with SGLT2 inhibition.
- Reduces the risk of cardiovascular death in adults with type 2 diabetes and established cardiovascular disease when used as prescribed.
- May help reduce blood pressure modestly in some patients due to osmotic diuresis from increased urinary glucose and sodium excretion.
- Convenient fixed-dose combination improves treatment adherence by reducing the number of separate tablets needed.
Warnings & Contraindications:
- Contraindicated in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus or for the treatment of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA).
- Do not use if you have severe kidney problems, significantly reduced kidney function, or are on dialysis. Kidney function should be assessed before starting and periodically during treatment.
- Not recommended during pregnancy or breast-feeding. If you become pregnant or plan to become pregnant, inform your doctor immediately.
- Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to empagliflozin, metformin, or any of the excipients.
- Metformin is associated with a rare but serious risk of lactic acidosis, particularly in patients with significant renal impairment, severe infection, dehydration, heart failure, liver impairment, or excessive alcohol intake.
- Use with caution in elderly patients, patients with cardiovascular disease, low blood pressure, or those taking diuretics, due to risk of volume depletion and hypotension.
- Empagliflozin may increase the risk of genital mycotic (fungal) infections and urinary tract infections; maintain good personal hygiene and report symptoms promptly.
- Consult your doctor before use if you have liver disease, heart failure, history of pancreatitis, recurrent urinary tract infections, or are taking other glucose-lowering medications (risk of hypoglycemia when combined with insulin or sulfonylureas).
- Avoid excessive alcohol intake while taking metformin-containing products due to increased risk of lactic acidosis.
- Not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease without medical supervision. Use only under the guidance of a qualified healthcare professional.
- Keep out of reach of children.
Side Effects:
- Common side effects: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, loss of appetite (mainly related to metformin); increased urination, thirst, and mild dehydration (related to empagliflozin); genital yeast infections (vulvovaginal candidiasis in women, balanitis in men); urinary tract infections.
- Less common side effects: dizziness or low blood pressure (especially in patients on diuretics or with low blood volume), increased blood lipids, rash or hypersensitivity reactions.
- Serious but rare side effects: lactic acidosis (symptoms include rapid breathing, severe weakness, muscle pain, stomach pain with nausea/vomiting, feeling very cold, dizziness, slow or irregular heartbeat); severe urinary tract infection or urosepsis; ketoacidosis in patients with type 2 diabetes (even with normal or moderately elevated blood glucose levels); severe allergic reactions (swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat, difficulty breathing).
- Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) is more likely when Empagliform is used together with insulin or insulin secretagogues (e.g., sulfonylureas). Symptoms include sweating, tremor, hunger, confusion, palpitations, and headache.
- If you experience signs of lactic acidosis, severe infection, severe abdominal pain, difficulty breathing, or symptoms of severe allergic reaction, stop taking the medicine and seek immediate medical attention.
