Examide 20 Mg Tablets
Description:
Examide 20 mg tablets are a prescription loop diuretic medicine containing torsemide, used to treat fluid retention (edema) and high blood pressure. As a potent pyridine-sulfonylurea class loop diuretic, Examide promotes the excretion of excess water and salts through the kidneys, helping to relieve swelling in conditions such as congestive heart failure and to support blood pressure control. It is intended for adult use under medical supervision.
Indications:
- Treatment of edema (fluid retention) associated with congestive heart failure (CHF).
- Treatment of edema associated with liver cirrhosis, renal disease, or other conditions where diuretic therapy is indicated (as directed by a physician).
- Management of hypertension (high blood pressure), alone or in combination with other antihypertensive agents, as prescribed by a doctor.
- Relief of symptoms related to fluid overload such as leg swelling, abdominal swelling, and shortness of breath due to pulmonary congestion in heart failure.
Active Ingredients / Key Components:
- Torsemide – 20 mg per tablet.
- Excipients: Other inactive ingredients (tablet fillers, binders, coatings, etc.) are present but specific excipient details and concentrations , please check the product leaflet or the manufacturer’s official website. Please refer to the official package insert for a full list.
Dosage & Administration / How to Use:
- Use Examide 20 mg tablets exactly as prescribed by your physician. Do not change your dose without medical advice.
- Typical adult dose for edema: The dose and frequency are individualized; your doctor may start with a lower dose and adjust based on response and kidney function. The 20 mg strength is commonly used once daily, but your doctor may modify the regimen.
- Typical adult dose for hypertension: Dose and frequency are determined by the treating physician, often once daily, alone or with other antihypertensives.
- Tablets are usually taken orally once daily, preferably at the same time each day.
- Can be taken with or without food; if stomach upset occurs, taking it with food may help.
- Take with a full glass of water. Avoid taking it late in the evening to reduce nighttime urination, unless specifically instructed otherwise by your doctor.
- If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless it is almost time for your next dose. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one.
- Regular monitoring of blood pressure, body weight, kidney function, and electrolytes (such as potassium, sodium, magnesium) is usually required during treatment.
Clinical Benefits:
- Provides potent diuretic action by inhibiting sodium and chloride reabsorption in the thick ascending limb of the loop of Henle, increasing urine output and promoting fluid loss.
- Helps reduce edema and swelling in the legs, abdomen, and lungs associated with congestive heart failure and other fluid overload states.
- Assists in lowering elevated blood pressure, contributing to cardiovascular risk reduction when used as part of a comprehensive treatment plan.
- Improves symptoms of heart failure such as shortness of breath and fatigue by decreasing left ventricular filling pressure and pulmonary congestion.
- Enhances venous capacitance and promotes renal and peripheral vasodilation, which can further support hemodynamic improvement in heart failure patients.
Warnings & Contraindications:
- Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to torsemide, other sulfonylurea or sulfonamide-derived drugs, or any component of the formulation.
- Contraindicated in patients with anuria (no urine output) or severe renal failure where diuretics are ineffective, unless specifically supervised by a specialist.
- Use with extreme caution in patients with severe electrolyte depletion (e.g., severe hyponatremia, hypokalemia), hypotension, or dehydration; correction of these conditions is recommended before starting therapy.
- May cause significant electrolyte imbalance (low potassium, sodium, magnesium, calcium) and changes in kidney function; regular blood tests are recommended.
- Use cautiously in patients with gout, diabetes, liver disease (including cirrhosis), or kidney impairment, as torsemide may worsen these conditions or require dose adjustment.
- May increase sensitivity to other antihypertensive medications and cause symptomatic hypotension (dizziness, fainting), especially at the start of therapy or when the dose is increased.
- Consult your doctor before use if pregnant or planning pregnancy. Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed and prescribed by a physician.
- Consult your doctor before use if breastfeeding; safety of torsemide in lactation is not fully established, and a risk–benefit assessment is required.
- Inform your doctor about all other medications you are taking, including other diuretics, blood pressure medicines, lithium, NSAIDs, or nephrotoxic drugs, due to potential interactions.
- Not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease without proper medical supervision; it is a prescription medicine that must be used under a doctor’s guidance.
- Keep out of reach of children.
- Do not use after the expiry date printed on the package. Do not share this medication with others.
Side Effects:
- Common side effects may include increased urination, thirst, dizziness, lightheadedness (especially when standing up quickly), headache, and mild gastrointestinal discomfort such as nausea or stomach upset.
- Electrolyte disturbances may occur, such as low potassium (hypokalemia), low sodium (hyponatremia), low magnesium, or low calcium, which can cause muscle cramps, weakness, irregular heartbeat, or fatigue.
- Changes in blood pressure, including low blood pressure (hypotension), may lead to fainting or dizziness.
- Less common but serious side effects can include severe dehydration, significant kidney function impairment, hearing disturbances (rare), severe allergic reactions (rash, itching, swelling of face or tongue, difficulty breathing), or severe electrolyte imbalance.
- Stop using the medication and seek immediate medical attention if you experience signs of severe allergic reaction, severe dizziness or fainting, chest pain, shortness of breath, very irregular heartbeat, confusion, or markedly reduced urine output.
- This is not a complete list of side effects. Always consult your doctor or pharmacist if you experience any unusual symptoms.
