Ganaton Tablets
Description:
Ganaton 50 mg film-coated tablets are a prescription gastrointestinal motility stimulant medicine containing itopride, used to improve stomach movement and relieve symptoms of functional dyspepsia and delayed gastric emptying. As a prokinetic dopamine (D2) receptor antagonist, Ganaton enhances gastric motility, accelerates gastric emptying, and helps reduce discomfort such as bloating, early satiety, and upper abdominal pain. Manufactured by Abbott Laboratories, Ganaton is intended for adult use under medical supervision to support healthy digestive function and improve quality of life in patients with non-ulcer dyspepsia and related motility disorders.
Indications:
- Functional (non-ulcer) dyspepsia and associated symptoms such as upper abdominal discomfort, bloating, early satiety, heartburn, and nausea.
- Gastrointestinal motility disorders, particularly delayed gastric emptying (gastroparesis) of non-obstructive origin, as assessed by a physician.
- Supportive treatment in conditions where improved gastric emptying and enhanced gastrointestinal peristalsis are desired, as prescribed by a doctor.
- Relief of postprandial fullness and epigastric pain related to impaired gastric motility.
Active Ingredients / Key Components:
- Itopride hydrochloride – 50 mg per film-coated tablet (prokinetic dopamine D2 receptor antagonist and acetylcholinesterase inhibitor).
- Excipients: Film-coating and tablet core excipients (such as fillers, binders, and colorants) are present but detailed composition and concentrations , please check the product leaflet or the manufacturer’s official website. Please refer to the official package leaflet for the full excipient list.
Dosage & Administration / How to Use:
- Adults: The typical recommended dose is 50 mg (1 tablet) three times daily, taken before each main meal, or as directed by your physician.
- Tablets should be swallowed whole with a sufficient amount of water. Do not crush or chew the film-coated tablets unless advised by your doctor.
- Take Ganaton preferably about 15–30 minutes before meals to maximize its prokinetic effect on gastric emptying.
- Duration of treatment should be determined by the prescribing physician based on the patient’s condition and response to therapy. Do not use for longer than recommended.
- If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless it is almost time for the next dose. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed dose.
- Use in children and adolescents: Safety and efficacy in pediatric patients have not been well established; use only if specifically prescribed by a pediatric specialist.
Clinical Benefits:
- Enhances gastric motility by increasing esophageal and gastrointestinal peristalsis, improving overall digestive transit.
- Accelerates gastric emptying and improves gastro-duodenal coordination, helping reduce post-meal fullness and discomfort.
- Increases lower esophageal sphincter pressure, which may help reduce reflux-related symptoms as assessed by a physician.
- Provides anti-emetic effect through dopamine D2 receptor antagonism at the chemoreceptor trigger zone (CTZ), helping reduce nausea.
- Helps alleviate symptoms of functional dyspepsia such as bloating, upper abdominal pain, and early satiety, thereby improving daily comfort and quality of life.
Warnings & Contraindications:
- Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity or allergy to itopride or any of the excipients in the formulation.
- Do not use in patients with gastrointestinal bleeding, mechanical obstruction, or perforation, as increased motility may worsen these conditions.
- Use with caution in patients with severe hepatic or renal impairment; dose adjustment or close monitoring may be required as directed by a physician.
- Because itopride acts on dopamine receptors, caution is advised in patients receiving other dopaminergic or antidopaminergic drugs.
- Drug interactions: Concomitant use with other motility agents such as cisapride or with anticholinergic agents such as atropine may alter the prokinetic effect; inform your doctor about all medications you are taking.
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Use only if clearly needed and prescribed by a doctor after assessing benefit–risk. Safety data in pregnancy and lactation are limited.
- May cause dizziness or fatigue in some patients; if affected, avoid driving, operating machinery, or performing tasks requiring alertness.
- Consult your doctor before use if you have liver disease, kidney disease, history of gastrointestinal surgery, or other significant medical conditions.
- Not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease without proper medical supervision.
- Keep out of reach of children.
Side Effects:
- Common side effects may include abdominal pain, diarrhea, constipation, nausea, vomiting, dry mouth, headache, dizziness, or fatigue.
- Less common side effects can include increased salivation, rash, itching, or other mild allergic reactions.
- Rare but serious side effects may include severe allergic reactions (swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat, difficulty breathing), marked abdominal pain, jaundice, or significant changes in bowel habits. Seek immediate medical attention if these occur.
- If you experience persistent or bothersome side effects, or any unusual symptoms, stop taking the medication and consult your healthcare provider promptly.
