About the product

Gastrobiotic 200 Mg 20 Tablets

Description:

Gastrobiotic 200 mg 20 tablets is a prescription oral antibiotic medicine containing rifaximin, designed for targeted treatment of gastrointestinal infections. It acts locally in the intestine with minimal systemic absorption, making it suitable for managing traveler’s diarrhea caused by noninvasive strains of Escherichia coli in patients over 12 years of age. Rifaximin is also recognized as an adjunctive therapy in hepatic encephalopathy to help reduce blood ammonia levels and improve neurological symptoms. This product is formulated as film-coated tablets for accurate dosing and convenient use under medical supervision.

Indications:

  • Treatment of traveler’s diarrhea caused by noninvasive strains of Escherichia coli in patients > 12 years of age.
  • Adjunctive treatment of hepatic encephalopathy (under specialist supervision) to reduce blood ammonia concentrations and decrease the severity of neurological manifestations.
  • Relief of symptoms associated with infectious traveler’s diarrhea such as frequent loose stools, abdominal discomfort, and urgency (when caused by susceptible noninvasive E. coli and as directed by a physician).

Active Ingredients / Key Components:

  • Rifaximin – 200 mg per tablet.
  • Other excipients (film-coating agents, fillers, stabilizers) – exact composition and concentrations , please check the product leaflet or the manufacturer’s official website. Please refer to the official package insert for full excipient list.

Dosage & Administration / How to Use:

  • Use only as prescribed by a physician.
  • Traveler’s diarrhea (patients > 12 years): The commonly used regimen for rifaximin 200 mg in traveler’s diarrhea is typically 200 mg three times daily for 3 days; however, the exact dose, frequency, and duration must be confirmed by the prescribing doctor and the official product leaflet. Do not exceed the prescribed course.
  • Hepatic encephalopathy (adjunctive therapy): Dosing and duration are individualized and must be determined strictly by a specialist according to clinical guidelines. Do not adjust your dose without medical advice.
  • Swallow the film-coated tablet whole with a glass of water. Do not crush or chew unless your doctor or pharmacist specifically advises otherwise.
  • Can generally be taken with or without food, unless your doctor recommends a specific schedule.
  • If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless it is almost time for the next dose. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed tablet.
  • Complete the full prescribed course even if symptoms improve early, to reduce the risk of treatment failure and antibiotic resistance.

Clinical Benefits:

  • Provides targeted intestinal antibacterial action against noninvasive strains of Escherichia coli, helping to control traveler’s diarrhea.
  • Acts locally in the gastrointestinal tract with minimal systemic absorption, potentially reducing systemic side effects compared to some other oral antibiotics.
  • Helps reduce stool frequency and improve stool consistency in eligible cases of traveler’s diarrhea, supporting faster symptom relief and recovery.
  • In hepatic encephalopathy (as adjunctive therapy), helps lower blood ammonia levels and may reduce the frequency and severity of neurological episodes when used alongside standard care (such as lactulose), as directed by a specialist.

Warnings & Contraindications:

  • Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity or allergy to rifaximin, rifamycin derivatives, or any component of the formulation.
  • Not recommended for use in diarrhea complicated by fever, blood in the stool, or suspected invasive bacterial infection unless specifically directed by a physician.
  • Use with caution in patients with severe hepatic impairment; dose adjustment or close monitoring may be required as per physician’s judgment.
  • Discontinue treatment and seek medical advice if diarrhea worsens, persists beyond the recommended treatment duration, or is accompanied by systemic symptoms (fever, severe abdominal pain, blood in stool).
  • Prolonged or repeated use may increase the risk of bacterial resistance or superinfection, including Clostridioides difficile–associated diarrhea; use only for the indicated duration.
  • Consult your doctor before use if pregnant or planning pregnancy. Rifaximin should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed and prescribed by a physician.
  • Consult your doctor before use if breastfeeding; the decision to continue breastfeeding or discontinue the drug should be made by the healthcare provider.
  • Inform your doctor about all other medications you are taking, including other antibiotics, anticoagulants, and over-the-counter products, to avoid potential interactions.
  • Patients with a history of severe liver disease, inflammatory bowel disease, or recurrent gastrointestinal infections should be monitored closely.
  • Consult your doctor before use if pregnant, nursing, taking medications, or have medical conditions such as liver disease or severe gastrointestinal disorders.
  • Not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease without proper medical supervision.
  • Keep out of reach of children.

Side Effects:
  • Common side effects may include nausea, abdominal pain, flatulence, headache, and increased bowel movements.
  • Other possible reactions can include dizziness, fever, or changes in liver function tests; inform your doctor if any unusual or persistent symptoms occur.
  • Serious side effects are rare but may include severe allergic reactions (rash, itching, swelling of face or throat, difficulty breathing) or severe, persistent diarrhea possibly associated with blood or mucus. Stop the medication and seek immediate medical attention if these occur.
  • If you experience signs of hepatic encephalopathy worsening (confusion, drowsiness, personality changes), contact your doctor promptly.
