Isotretinoin 20 Mg Capsules
Description:
Isotretinoin 20 mg capsules are a prescription oral medicine used for the treatment of severe, resistant acne that has not responded adequately to conventional therapies such as systemic antibiotics and topical treatments. Each soft gelatin capsule contains isotretinoin, a retinoic acid derivative (vitamin A isomer) that acts directly on the sebaceous glands to reduce sebum production, shrink gland size, and normalize skin cell turnover. This leads to a marked reduction in inflammatory nodules, cysts, and comedones, helping to clear severe nodulocystic acne and reduce the risk of permanent scarring. This product is intended for use under strict medical supervision only.
Indications:
- Severe nodular or nodulocystic acne unresponsive to adequate courses of systemic antibiotics and topical anti-acne treatments.
- Acne conglobata and other forms of very severe, disfiguring acne associated with a high risk of scarring.
- Acne causing significant psychological distress or social impairment when other therapies have failed.
- Reduction of excessive sebum (oil) production in severe acne-prone skin.
Active Ingredients / Key Components:
- Isotretinoin – 20 mg per soft gelatin capsule.
- Other excipients (capsule shell and fillers) are present but specific composition and concentrations , please check the product leaflet or the manufacturer’s official website.
Dosage & Administration / How to Use:
- Isotretinoin 20 mg capsules must be used only under the supervision of a dermatologist or qualified physician experienced in the use of systemic retinoids.
- Typical starting dose: usually 0.5 mg/kg/day, which may be adjusted by the physician according to response and tolerability. The daily dose may be divided into one or two doses.
- Maximum dose: up to 1 mg/kg/day may be used in severe cases, as directed by the doctor.
- Duration of therapy: usually 16–24 weeks, or until a cumulative dose recommended by the physician is reached. Some patients may require a second course after an interval, based on medical assessment.
- Administration: Swallow the capsule whole with a glass of water. Take with food, preferably a meal containing some fat, to enhance absorption.
- Do not chew, crush, or open the capsules.
- If a dose is missed, take it as soon as you remember on the same day. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one.
- Strict pregnancy prevention measures (effective contraception) are mandatory for women of childbearing potential starting at least 1 month before treatment, during treatment, and for at least 1 month after stopping isotretinoin, as directed by the physician.
Clinical Benefits:
- Significantly reduces sebum (oil) production by decreasing sebocyte number and shrinking sebaceous gland size, helping to control very oily, acne-prone skin.
- Normalizes keratinization and helps prevent formation of new comedones (blackheads and whiteheads), leading to long-term acne control.
- Decreases the number and severity of inflammatory acne lesions, including nodules and cysts, improving overall skin appearance.
- Helps reduce the risk of permanent acne scarring and associated psychological impact by effectively treating severe, treatment-resistant acne.
Warnings & Contraindications:
- Contraindicated in pregnancy and in women planning to become pregnant. Isotretinoin is highly teratogenic and can cause severe birth defects. Do not use if you are pregnant or may become pregnant during treatment or within at least 1 month after stopping.
- Contraindicated during breastfeeding, as isotretinoin may pass into breast milk and harm the infant.
- Contraindicated in patients with severe liver impairment, significantly elevated liver enzymes, or severe hyperlipidemia, unless specifically assessed and monitored by a physician.
- Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to isotretinoin, other retinoids, or any component of the capsule.
- Do not use concomitantly with vitamin A supplements or other retinoids due to risk of hypervitaminosis A.
- Use with caution in patients with a history of depression, mood disorders, or suicidal ideation; psychiatric evaluation and close monitoring are recommended.
- Regular monitoring of liver function tests and lipid profile (cholesterol and triglycerides) is required before, during, and after therapy as directed by the physician.
- Avoid blood donation during treatment and for at least 1 month after stopping isotretinoin, to prevent exposure of pregnant recipients.
- Avoid excessive sun exposure and use broad-spectrum sunscreen, as isotretinoin can increase skin sensitivity to UV radiation.
- Drug interactions: Concomitant use with tetracycline antibiotics may increase the risk of benign intracranial hypertension (pseudotumor cerebri); avoid combination unless specifically directed by a doctor. Alcohol may lead to formation of etretinate and worsen lipid abnormalities. Isotretinoin may reduce the anticoagulant effect of warfarin, reduce plasma concentration of carbamazepine, and increase plasma concentration of methotrexate; monitoring and dose adjustments may be required.
- Consult your doctor before use if you have liver disease, high cholesterol or triglycerides, diabetes, obesity, alcohol dependence, psychiatric illness, or are taking any other medications.
- Not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease without proper medical supervision.
- Keep out of reach of children.
