Kokast 4 mg 7 Chewable Tablet
Description:
Kokast 4 mg 7 Chewable Tablet is a prescription anti-asthma medicine containing montelukast, a leukotriene (CysLT1) receptor antagonist. It is used as a maintenance treatment to help control chronic asthma symptoms, improve breathing, and reduce the frequency of asthma attacks, especially in children who prefer a chewable dosage form. Kokast works by blocking inflammatory substances in the lungs (leukotrienes), thereby decreasing bronchoconstriction and airway inflammation. It is not a rescue medication for sudden asthma attacks but a controller therapy to be taken regularly as directed by a physician.
Indications:
- Long-term management and prophylaxis of chronic asthma.
- Helps prevent exercise-induced bronchocronstriction when used as directed by a doctor.
- Relief and prevention of asthma symptoms such as wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and night-time coughing.
- May be used as part of a regular asthma control regimen in patients who require additional control beyond inhaled corticosteroids (as advised by a physician).
Active Ingredients / Key Components:
- Montelukast sodium – 4 mg per chewable tablet.
- Other excipients (chewable tablet base, sweeteners, flavoring agents, stabilizers, and preservatives) – exact composition and concentrations , please check the product leaflet or the manufacturer’s official website. Refer to the package insert for full excipient list.
Dosage & Administration / How to Use:
- Use only as prescribed by a physician. Do not exceed the recommended dose.
- Typical dose for children (age group commonly prescribed 4 mg) is 1 chewable tablet (4 mg) once daily, usually in the evening, or as directed by the doctor. The exact age range and dosing schedule must be confirmed by the prescribing physician and the official leaflet.
- Chew the tablet thoroughly before swallowing. Do not swallow whole.
- Can be taken with or without food, but try to take it at the same time every day for best control of symptoms.
- Do not use Kokast 4 mg to treat sudden asthma attacks. In case of acute attack, use the prescribed rescue inhaler (short-acting bronchodilator) and seek medical advice.
- If a dose is missed, take it as soon as you remember unless it is almost time for the next dose. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one.
- Continue treatment even if symptoms improve, unless your doctor advises stopping. Abrupt discontinuation without medical advice is not recommended.
Clinical Benefits:
- Helps control chronic asthma by blocking leukotriene-mediated bronchoconstriction and inflammation in the airways.
- Reduces frequency and severity of asthma symptoms such as wheezing, coughing, and shortness of breath when taken regularly.
- Improves lung function and overall breathing comfort, supporting better daily activity and sleep quality.
- Chewable tablet form enhances convenience and adherence, especially in children and patients who have difficulty swallowing conventional tablets.
Warnings & Contraindications:
- Do not use Kokast 4 mg if you are allergic (hypersensitive) to montelukast or any of the tablet ingredients.
- Not a substitute for inhaled or oral corticosteroids; do not abruptly replace or stop existing steroid therapy without medical supervision.
- Not indicated for relief of acute asthma attacks. Always keep a fast-acting bronchodilator (rescue inhaler) available as prescribed.
- Use with caution in patients with liver impairment; dose adjustment or close monitoring may be required as advised by a doctor.
- Inform your doctor about all medicines you are taking, especially barbiturates and primidone, as these may reduce plasma concentration and effectiveness of montelukast.
- Consult your doctor before use if pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding. Use only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk.
- Monitor for changes in mood or behavior, including agitation, anxiety, depression, or suicidal thoughts, and report them immediately to a healthcare professional.
- Consult your doctor before use if you have any chronic medical conditions such as liver disease or are taking long-term medications.
- Keep out of reach of children. Use only under adult supervision in pediatric patients.
- Not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease beyond its approved medical indications.
Side Effects:
- Common side effects may include headache, abdominal pain, indigestion, nausea, diarrhea, and tiredness.
- Other possible side effects include upper respiratory tract infection symptoms, cough, fever, and sore throat.
- Neuropsychiatric events such as sleep disturbances, vivid dreams, irritability, agitation, anxiety, depression, or suicidal thoughts have been reported with montelukast. Seek medical attention if any unusual mood or behavior changes occur.
- Allergic reactions (rash, itching, swelling of face/lips/tongue, difficulty breathing) are rare but serious; discontinue use and seek emergency medical help if they occur.
- If you experience persistent or severe side effects, contact your doctor or pharmacist promptly.
