Lantus Solostar 100 Unites/ 5 X 3 ml

Description:

Lantus Solostar 100 i.u./ml is a long-acting basal insulin analogue (insulin glargine) used as a prescription antidiabetic medicine for the management of diabetes mellitus. Each pre-filled Solostar pen delivers a steady, 24-hour insulin effect to help control fasting and between-meal blood glucose levels in adults, adolescents, and children with diabetes who require basal insulin. It is part of comprehensive diabetes care and is typically used once daily, at the same time each day, as directed by a healthcare professional.

Indications:

  • Long-term treatment of diabetes mellitus in adults, adolescents, and children (from age specified by local labeling) who require basal insulin for blood glucose control.
  • Management of type 1 diabetes mellitus as the basal component of an insulin regimen, in combination with rapid- or short-acting insulin for mealtime coverage.
  • Management of type 2 diabetes mellitus when oral antidiabetic medicines alone are insufficient to achieve adequate glycemic control, or when insulin therapy is indicated.
  • Helps reduce elevated fasting blood glucose and maintain stable 24-hour basal insulin levels.

Active Ingredients / Key Components:

  • Insulin glargine – 100 units/ml (long-acting basal insulin analogue).
  • Each Solostar pre-filled pen contains 3 ml solution for injection (equivalent to 300 units of insulin glargine).
  • Pack size: 5 pre-filled pens (total 15 ml, equivalent to 1500 units of insulin glargine).
  • Excipients (such as zinc, m-cresol, glycerol, and others) may be present to stabilize the insulin solution; exact excipient list and concentrations , please check the product leaflet or the manufacturer’s official website and must be confirmed from the official package leaflet.

Dosage & Administration / How to Use:

  • Lantus Solostar is for subcutaneous injection only. Do not administer intravenously or via insulin pump.
  • Usual dose: individualized by the physician based on blood glucose monitoring, type of diabetes, previous insulin use, diet, and physical activity. There is no fixed standard dose; follow your doctor’s prescription exactly.
  • Typically administered once daily, at the same time each day (morning or evening), as advised by the healthcare provider.
  • Injection sites: inject into the subcutaneous tissue of the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm. Rotate injection sites within the same region to reduce the risk of lipodystrophy (skin thickening or thinning).
  • Preparation: use a new sterile needle for each injection. Check the label to ensure you are using Lantus Solostar 100 i.u./ml. Inspect the solution; it should be clear and colorless, without particles. Do not use if cloudy, colored, or contains particles.
  • Using the pen: remove the cap, attach a new needle, perform the safety test/air shot as instructed in the patient leaflet, dial the prescribed dose, insert the needle into the skin, and press the injection button fully. Hold in place for several seconds to ensure full dose delivery, then remove the needle and dispose of it safely in a sharps container.
  • With or without food: as a basal insulin, Lantus can be given regardless of meals, but must be taken at the same time each day. Mealtime insulin or oral antidiabetics may still be required as directed by your doctor.
  • Missed dose: if you forget a dose, follow your doctor’s instructions or contact your healthcare provider. Do not double the next dose without medical advice, as this may cause hypoglycaemia.
  • Do not share your Solostar pen or needles with anyone, even if the needle is changed, to avoid cross-infection.

Clinical Benefits:

  • Provides stable, long-acting basal insulin coverage for up to 24 hours, helping maintain consistent blood glucose control between meals and overnight.
  • Reduces fasting blood glucose and overall glycaemic variability when used as prescribed and combined with appropriate diet and lifestyle measures.
  • Designed as a once-daily injection to support treatment adherence and simplify basal insulin therapy.
  • Pre-filled Solostar pen allows accurate dose titration and convenient, discreet administration for patients with diabetes.

Warnings & Contraindications:

  • Do not use Lantus Solostar if you are allergic (hypersensitive) to insulin glargine or any of the excipients listed in the official leaflet.
  • Do not use Lantus Solostar for treatment of diabetic ketoacidosis; a rapid-acting insulin is required in that situation under medical supervision.
  • Never inject Lantus intravenously or via an insulin pump. Intravenous administration of the usual subcutaneous dose may cause severe hypoglycaemia.
  • Use with caution in patients with renal or hepatic impairment; insulin requirements may be reduced and careful monitoring is required.
  • Hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar) is the most common risk with insulin therapy. Monitor blood glucose regularly and recognize symptoms such as sweating, tremor, hunger, palpitations, headache, confusion, or dizziness.
  • Hyperglycaemia (high blood sugar) and diabetic ketoacidosis may occur if doses are missed, insulin is not stored correctly, or if the pen malfunctions or is used improperly.
  • Adjustments of dose may be necessary during illness, changes in physical activity, dietary changes, or when switching from another insulin product. Such changes should only be made under medical supervision.
  • Alcohol, some medicines (e.g., beta-blockers, corticosteroids, oral antidiabetics, ACE inhibitors, diuretics, certain antidepressants) can affect insulin requirements and mask or enhance hypoglycaemia; consult your doctor or pharmacist before combining.
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding: consult your doctor before use. Insulin requirements may change during pregnancy and postpartum; close monitoring is essential.
  • Driving and using machines: hypoglycaemia can impair concentration and reaction time. Take precautions when driving or operating machinery, especially if you have frequent hypoglycaemia or reduced awareness of its symptoms.
  • Consult your doctor before use if you have severe liver disease, kidney disease, adrenal, pituitary or thyroid disorders, or if you are taking other medications that affect blood glucose.
  • Keep out of reach of children.

Side Effects:
  • Very common and common side effects: hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar) with symptoms such as sweating, shakiness, hunger, headache, palpitations, confusion, blurred vision, or irritability. Severe hypoglycaemia may lead to loss of consciousness, seizures, or coma and requires urgent medical attention.
  • Local injection site reactions: redness, pain, itching, swelling, or bruising at the injection site. These are usually mild and transient.
  • Lipodystrophy at injection site (lipohypertrophy or lipoatrophy): thickening or thinning of the fatty tissue under the skin. Rotating injection sites helps reduce this risk.
  • Allergic reactions: rash, itching, or more rarely, severe generalized allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) with difficulty breathing, swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat. Seek immediate medical attention if signs of severe allergy occur.
  • Oedema (fluid retention) and weight gain may occur, especially when improving previously poor metabolic control.
  • Visual disturbances and temporary changes in refraction may occur when blood glucose control is rapidly improved.
  • If you experience any unusual, persistent, or severe side effects, contact your doctor or pharmacist promptly.
