About the product

Lasix 40 Mg Tablets

Description:

Lasix 40 mg tablets are a prescription loop diuretic medicine containing furosemide, used to remove excess fluid from the body and manage conditions associated with edema and fluid overload. It acts on the kidneys to increase urine production, helping reduce swelling in the legs, lungs, and other tissues, and is also used in the management of high blood pressure (hypertension) as part of a comprehensive treatment plan. Lasix 40 mg is commonly prescribed in cardiology, nephrology, and internal medicine for adults under medical supervision.

Indications:

  • Treatment of edema (fluid retention) associated with congestive heart failure.
  • Management of edema due to chronic renal insufficiency, acute renal failure, or nephrotic syndrome, as prescribed by a doctor.
  • Edema associated with liver cirrhosis and other liver diseases, under specialist supervision.
  • Adjunctive treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure), alone or in combination with other antihypertensive agents.
  • Relief of symptoms related to fluid overload such as swelling of legs and ankles, shortness of breath due to pulmonary congestion, and weight gain from fluid retention.

Active Ingredients / Key Components:

  • Furosemide – 40 mg per tablet (loop diuretic).
  • Excipients: Other inactive ingredients (tablet core and coating) are present but specific excipient names and concentrations , please check the product leaflet or the manufacturer’s official website. Refer to the official package leaflet for full excipient list.

Dosage & Administration / How to Use:

  • Lasix 40 mg tablets must be used exactly as prescribed by a physician. Do not change your dose without medical advice.
  • Adults (for edema): Typical starting dose is 20–80 mg furosemide per day taken as a single dose or divided doses, adjusted by the doctor according to response. The 40 mg strength is often used as an initial or maintenance dose, but the exact regimen is individualized.
  • Adults (for hypertension): Usual dose ranges from 20–80 mg per day, alone or combined with other antihypertensives, as directed by the doctor.
  • Tablets should generally be swallowed whole with a glass of water. They may be taken with or without food; however, take them consistently the same way each day.
  • To reduce nighttime urination, it is usually recommended to take Lasix in the morning; if a second dose is prescribed, it is often taken early afternoon.
  • Do not exceed the prescribed daily dose. High doses require close medical monitoring of kidney function, blood pressure, and electrolytes (such as potassium, sodium, magnesium).
  • If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless it is almost time for the next dose. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed dose.
  • Use in children, elderly patients, and patients with liver or kidney impairment requires special dosing and must be strictly supervised by a physician.

Clinical Benefits:

  • Rapid and potent diuretic effect: Promotes increased urine output, helping the body eliminate excess water and salt.
  • Reduces edema and swelling: Helps decrease fluid accumulation in legs, ankles, lungs, and other tissues, improving comfort and mobility.
  • Improves breathing in heart failure: By reducing pulmonary congestion and fluid in the lungs, it can help relieve shortness of breath and improve exercise tolerance.
  • Supports blood pressure control: Contributes to lowering high blood pressure as part of a comprehensive antihypertensive regimen.

Warnings & Contraindications:

  • Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to furosemide, other sulfonamide-derived drugs, or any component of the formulation.
  • Contraindicated in patients with anuria (no urine production), severe electrolyte depletion (such as severe hypokalemia, hyponatremia), or severe dehydration until these conditions are corrected.
  • Use with extreme caution in patients with kidney impairment, liver cirrhosis, diabetes, gout, low blood pressure, enlarged prostate, or difficulty urinating.
  • May cause significant fluid and electrolyte imbalance (loss of potassium, sodium, magnesium, calcium). Regular monitoring of blood electrolytes, kidney function, and blood pressure is essential during treatment.
  • Can increase sensitivity to other medicines such as antihypertensives, cardiac glycosides (e.g., digoxin), certain antibiotics, lithium, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Inform your doctor about all medicines and supplements you are taking.
  • May cause dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting, especially when standing up quickly. Avoid driving or operating machinery until you know how the medicine affects you.
  • Consult your doctor before use if pregnant or planning pregnancy. Furosemide should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed and under strict medical supervision.
  • Breastfeeding: Furosemide passes into breast milk and may reduce milk production. Breastfeeding while taking Lasix is generally not recommended unless advised by a doctor.
  • Consult your doctor before use if you have liver disease, kidney disease, diabetes, gout, lupus, or are taking medications that affect blood pressure, kidney function, or electrolytes.
  • Not intended for self-medication or over-the-counter use. Always use under medical supervision.
  • Keep out of reach of children.

Side Effects:
  • Common side effects: Increased urination, thirst, dizziness, lightheadedness (especially when standing), headache, weakness, and mild gastrointestinal upset such as nausea, vomiting, or abdominal discomfort.
  • Electrolyte disturbances: Low potassium (hypokalemia), low sodium (hyponatremia), low magnesium or calcium may occur, leading to muscle cramps, fatigue, irregular heartbeat, or confusion. Regular blood tests are recommended.
  • Cardiovascular effects: Low blood pressure (hypotension), especially in dehydrated patients or those on other blood pressure medicines, may cause fainting or collapse.
  • Metabolic effects: May increase blood glucose, uric acid (risk of gout attacks), and cholesterol or triglyceride levels in some patients.
  • Less common but serious side effects: Hearing disturbances or tinnitus (usually with high doses or rapid intravenous use), severe allergic reactions (rash, itching, swelling, difficulty breathing), severe dehydration, kidney dysfunction, or pancreatitis.
  • Seek immediate medical attention if you experience severe dizziness or fainting, chest pain, shortness of breath, severe abdominal pain, hearing problems, signs of severe dehydration (very dry mouth, extreme thirst, little or no urination), or signs of allergy such as swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat.
