Levoxin 500 Mg 5 Tablets
Description:
Levoxin 500 mg film-coated tablets is a prescription systemic antibiotic containing levofloxacin, a third-generation fluoroquinolone with broad-spectrum antibacterial activity. It is used in adults to treat a wide range of bacterial infections affecting the respiratory tract, urinary tract, skin and soft tissues, and the gastrointestinal system. Levoxin works by inhibiting bacterial DNA replication, thereby stopping bacterial growth and helping the body clear the infection. This medicine should be used under medical supervision and according to your doctor’s instructions.
Indications:
- Acute bacterial sinusitis (infection of the sinuses) caused by susceptible organisms.
- Acute exacerbation of chronic bronchitis and other lower respiratory tract infections.
- Community-acquired pneumonia and other susceptible bacterial pneumonias.
- Complicated and uncomplicated urinary tract infections (uti), including pyelonephritis, caused by susceptible bacteria.
- Traveler's diarrhoea caused by susceptible bacterial strains.
- Skin and soft tissue infections, including uncomplicated and certain complicated infections.
- Urethritis and certain other genitourinary infections due to susceptible organisms.
- Other infections as determined appropriate by the prescribing physician based on culture and sensitivity results.
Active Ingredients / Key Components:
- Levofloxacin – 500 mg per film-coated tablet (fluoroquinolone antibacterial agent).
- Excipients: film-coating and tablet core excipients (such as fillers, binders, disintegrants, colorants) – exact composition and concentrations , please check the product leaflet or the manufacturer’s official website. Please refer to the official package leaflet for full excipient list.
Dosage & Administration / How to Use:
- Levoxin 500 mg tablets is for oral use in adults only and must be taken exactly as prescribed by your doctor.
- Typical adult dose: 500 mg once daily or twice daily, depending on the type and severity of infection, kidney function, and clinical response. The exact dose and duration are determined by the physician.
- Duration of treatment commonly ranges from 3 to 14 days, and may be longer for certain infections, as advised by your doctor.
- Swallow the tablet whole with a sufficient amount of water; do not crush or chew the film-coated tablet.
- May be taken with or without food. Taking it at the same time each day helps maintain consistent blood levels.
- Avoid taking Levoxin at the same time as antacids containing magnesium or aluminum, sucralfate, or supplements containing iron or zinc; if needed, separate doses by at least 2 hours before or after Levoxin to avoid reduced absorption.
- If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless it is almost time for the next dose. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed dose.
- Complete the full course of therapy even if you feel better early, to prevent relapse and antibiotic resistance.
- Use in children and adolescents is generally not recommended unless specifically directed by a specialist.
Clinical Benefits:
- Provides broad-spectrum antibacterial coverage against many gram-positive and gram-negative pathogens responsible for respiratory, urinary, skin, and gastrointestinal infections.
- Once-daily dosing in many indications enhances convenience and supports better treatment adherence.
- Rapid onset of action helps reduce infection-related symptoms such as fever, pain, cough, and urinary discomfort.
- Effective penetration into lung tissue, urinary tract, and skin/soft tissues for targeted infection control.
- Helps shorten the duration of bacterial infections when used appropriately, supporting faster recovery and return to normal activities.
Warnings & Contraindications:
- Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to levofloxacin, other quinolones/fluoroquinolones, or any component of the formulation.
- Contraindicated in patients with a history of fluoroquinolone-associated tendinitis or tendon rupture.
- Use with extreme caution in patients with a history of seizures, epilepsy, or other central nervous system disorders, as fluoroquinolones may increase the risk of convulsions.
- May increase the risk of tendinitis and tendon rupture (especially Achilles tendon), particularly in elderly patients, those on corticosteroids, or with kidney, heart, or lung transplants. Discontinue immediately and consult a doctor if tendon pain, swelling, or inflammation occurs.
- Fluoroquinolones, including levofloxacin, have been associated with peripheral neuropathy (nerve damage). Stop treatment and seek medical advice if you experience pain, burning, tingling, numbness, or weakness.
- May cause QT interval prolongation; use cautiously in patients with known QT prolongation, uncorrected electrolyte disturbances (e.g. low potassium or magnesium), or those taking other QT-prolonging drugs.
- Use with caution in patients with renal impairment; dose adjustment may be required according to kidney function.
- May cause photosensitivity; avoid excessive sunlight or UV exposure and use protective clothing and sunscreen during treatment.
- Can affect blood glucose levels; use with caution in diabetic patients, especially those on oral hypoglycemics or insulin. Monitor blood glucose regularly.
- Consult your doctor before use if pregnant or planning pregnancy. Levofloxacin is generally not recommended during pregnancy unless clearly needed.
- Breastfeeding: levofloxacin may pass into breast milk; your doctor will decide whether to discontinue breastfeeding or stop the medicine.
- May cause dizziness, drowsiness, or visual disturbances; avoid driving or operating machinery if affected.
- Not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease without medical supervision; it is a prescription-only systemic antibiotic.
- Keep out of reach of children.
- Always follow your doctor’s instructions and the patient information leaflet included in the package.
