About the product

Lipitor 40 Mg Tablets

Description:

Lipitor 40 mg tablets are a prescription lipid-lowering medicine containing atorvastatin, a member of the statin class of drugs. They are used to reduce high cholesterol and triglyceride levels and to lower the risk of serious cardiovascular events such as heart attack and stroke in adults at risk or with established heart disease. Lipitor 40 mg is taken orally and is typically used as an adjunct to a cholesterol-lowering diet, lifestyle modification, and other cardiovascular risk factor management under medical supervision.

Indications:

  • Primary prevention of coronary heart disease (CHD) in adults with multiple risk factors (e.g., smoking, hypertension, diabetes, low HDL-C, family history of early CHD) to reduce the risk of myocardial infarction (heart attack), stroke, angina, and the need for revascularization procedures.
  • Secondary prevention in adults with established coronary heart disease to reduce the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, angina, and revascularization procedures.
  • Reduction of cardiovascular events in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS), including unstable angina or non–Q-wave myocardial infarction.
  • Treatment of primary hypercholesterolemia (heterozygous familial and non-familial) and mixed dyslipidemia (Fredrickson Types IIa and IIb) as an adjunct to diet to reduce total cholesterol, LDL-C, apolipoprotein B (apoB), and triglycerides, and to increase HDL-C.
  • Treatment of homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia as an adjunct to other lipid-lowering treatments (e.g., LDL apheresis) or when such treatments are unavailable.
  • Treatment of primary dysbetalipoproteinemia (Fredrickson Type III) as an adjunct to diet.
  • Treatment of hypertriglyceridemia (Fredrickson Type IV) as an adjunct to diet.

Active Ingredients / Key Components:

  • Atorvastatin (as atorvastatin calcium) – 40 mg per tablet.
  • Other inactive ingredients (excipients) are present in the tablet core and coating; detailed excipient list and concentrations , please check the product leaflet or the manufacturer’s official website. Please refer to the official package insert for full composition.

Dosage & Administration / How to Use:

  • Adults (oral): Usual initial dose is 10 mg once daily. The dose may be adjusted by the physician at intervals of 2–4 weeks based on lipid profile and clinical response, up to a maximum of 80 mg/day.
  • Lipitor 40 mg tablets are typically used when lower strengths are insufficient or when a higher-intensity statin regimen is required, as determined by the treating physician.
  • Take the tablet once daily, at the same time each day, with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water; do not crush or chew unless advised by your doctor.
  • Continue following a cholesterol-lowering diet and lifestyle (exercise, weight control, smoking cessation) as recommended by your healthcare provider.
  • If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless it is almost time for your next dose. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
  • Use only under medical supervision. Do not change the dose or stop treatment without consulting your doctor, as cholesterol levels and cardiovascular risk may increase.

Clinical Benefits:

  • Effectively lowers elevated LDL cholesterol ("bad" cholesterol), total cholesterol, and apoB, helping to improve overall lipid profile.
  • Reduces triglyceride levels and can modestly increase HDL cholesterol ("good" cholesterol), contributing to better cardiovascular health.
  • Helps reduce the risk of major cardiovascular events, including myocardial infarction, stroke, and the need for coronary revascularization procedures in high-risk patients.
  • Supports long-term prevention and management of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease when combined with diet and lifestyle modifications.

Warnings & Contraindications:

  • Contraindicated in patients with active liver disease or unexplained persistent elevations of serum transaminases.
  • Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to atorvastatin or any component of the formulation.
  • Contraindicated during pregnancy and in women who are breastfeeding. Women of childbearing potential should use effective contraception while taking atorvastatin.
  • Use with caution in patients with a history of liver impairment, heavy alcohol use, hypothyroidism, or renal impairment, as these may increase the risk of muscle-related side effects.
  • Risk of myopathy and rhabdomyolysis: Inform your doctor immediately if you experience unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, weakness, or cramps, especially if accompanied by malaise or fever.
  • Periodic monitoring of liver function tests and lipid profile is recommended as directed by your healthcare provider.
  • Atorvastatin may interact with certain medications (e.g., some antibiotics, antifungals, HIV protease inhibitors, other lipid-lowering drugs, immunosuppressants). Inform your doctor and pharmacist about all medicines, supplements, or herbal products you are taking.
  • Consult your doctor before use if pregnant, nursing, taking medications, or have medical conditions such as liver disease, kidney disease, thyroid disorders, or a history of muscle disorders.
  • Not intended for self-diagnosis or self-treatment of high cholesterol. Always use under medical supervision.
  • Keep out of reach of children.

Side Effects:
  • Common side effects may include headache, nausea, diarrhea, constipation, abdominal pain, indigestion, joint pain, or mild muscle aches.
  • Less common side effects can include elevated liver enzymes, rash, itching, or sleep disturbances.
  • Serious side effects (seek immediate medical attention): severe muscle pain, tenderness or weakness (especially with fever or dark-colored urine), signs of liver problems (yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, severe fatigue, upper right abdominal pain), or severe allergic reactions (swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat, difficulty breathing).
  • Not all possible side effects are listed. Consult your doctor or pharmacist if you experience any unusual or persistent symptoms.
