Marovarex 120 mg is a brand name for delayed-release capsules containing dimethyl fumarate (14 capsules per pack), manufactured by Hikma Pharma.
What It Treats
Multiple Sclerosis (MS): It is prescribed to treat relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis in adults, such as relapsing-remitting MS, to help reduce the frequency of flare-ups and slow down physical disability.
How it works: Dimethyl fumarate acts as an anti-inflammatory and helps protect cells from oxidative stress, though the exact way it treats MS is not fully understood.
Important Details
Dosage: Treatment usually starts at 120 mg twice a day for the first 7 days. After one week, the doctor typically increases the dose to the standard maintenance dose of 240 mg twice a day.
Usage: Capsules must be swallowed whole and not crushed, chewed, or opened. Taking it with food can help reduce common side effects like stomach upset or flushing.
Marovarex (dimethyl fumarate) can cause several common side effects, most of which affect the skin and digestive system. It also carries important safety warnings regarding rare but serious medical conditions.
Common Side Effects
These usually occur early in the treatment (especially during the first month) and often improve or disappear over time:
Flushing: Warmth, redness, itching, or a burning sensation on your face, neck, or chest. Taking the medication with food can reduce this.
Stomach Discomfort: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, indigestion, and heartburn.
Important Safety Warnings & Serious Side Effects
You should contact your doctor or seek medical care immediately if you experience any of the following:
Brain Infection (PML): Dimethyl fumarate increases the risk of a rare, serious brain infection called Progressive Multifocal Leukoencephalopathy (PML), which can lead to disability or death. Watch for new or worsening symptoms like confusion, vision changes, loss of coordination, clumsiness, difficulty speaking, or weakness on one side of your body.
Low White Blood Cell Counts (Lymphopenia): The medication can lower your white blood cells, decreasing your body's ability to fight off infections. Your doctor will run regular blood tests to monitor this.
Liver Damage: Symptoms include severe nausea, vomiting, yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice), dark urine, pale stools, or upper-right stomach pain.
Severe Stomach Problems: While mild stomach upset is normal, notify your doctor immediately if you develop severe, persistent stomach pain, rectal bleeding, or black, tarry stools.
Serious Allergic Reactions: Seek emergency help if you experience signs of anaphylaxis or angioedema, such as hives, trouble breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat.
Shingles (Herpes Zoster): Serious cases of shingles can occur during treatment. Watch for a painful, blistering skin rash.
