Novorapid Penfil 100 Uml 3 ml
Description:
Novorapid Penfil 100 iu/ml 3 ml is a rapid-acting insulin analog medication containing insulin aspart, used for the treatment and control of diabetes mellitus in adults, adolescents, and children. It is designed for use in compatible insulin pens as a cartridge (penfill) to provide fast onset blood glucose control around meal times. As a prescription antidiabetic medicine, Novorapid helps lower high blood sugar and reduces the risk of both short-term and long-term diabetes complications when used as part of a comprehensive diabetes management plan including diet, exercise, and regular blood glucose monitoring.
Indications:
- Management of diabetes mellitus in adults, adolescents, and children who require insulin for blood glucose control.
- Type 1 diabetes mellitus (insulin-dependent diabetes) for basal-bolus regimens in combination with intermediate or long-acting insulin or other antidiabetic agents as prescribed.
- Type 2 diabetes mellitus when oral antidiabetic medicines alone are insufficient to achieve adequate glycemic control.
- Control of postprandial (after-meal) hyperglycemia due to its rapid onset of action.
- May be used in special situations such as surgery, acute illness, or stress where tight glucose control is required, under medical supervision.
Active Ingredients / Key Components:
- Insulin aspart – 100 iu/ml (rapid-acting insulin analog).
- Each 3 ml cartridge (penfill) contains a total of 300 iu of insulin aspart.
- Excipients (such as glycerol, phenol, metacresol, zinc chloride, sodium chloride, disodium phosphate dihydrate, hydrochloric acid/sodium hydroxide for pH adjustment, and water for injections) are typically present in insulin aspart solutions; however, the exact excipient list and their concentrations for this specific product , please check the product leaflet or the manufacturer’s official website. Please refer to the official package leaflet for full composition details.
Dosage & Administration / How to Use:
- Novorapid Penfil is for subcutaneous injection only and must be used with a compatible insulin pen device as a cartridge (penfill). Do not use it as an intravenous infusion unless specifically directed and supervised by medical professionals.
- Typical timing: Inject immediately before a meal, or when necessary, shortly after starting a meal, as directed by your doctor, due to its rapid onset of action.
- Dosage is individualized: Your total daily insulin dose and Novorapid dose will be determined by your healthcare provider based on your blood glucose levels, diet, physical activity, and type of diabetes.
- Novorapid is usually used as part of a basal-bolus regimen, combined with intermediate or long-acting insulin or other antidiabetic medications as prescribed.
- Rotate injection sites within the same region (abdomen, thigh, upper arm, or buttock) to reduce the risk of lipodystrophy (changes in subcutaneous fat tissue).
- Check the cartridge before use: ensure the insulin solution is clear, colorless, and free from particles. Do not use if cloudy, colored, or if there are visible particles.
- Follow the instructions for your specific insulin pen: insert the penfill cartridge correctly, prime the pen to remove air bubbles, select the prescribed dose, and inject according to the pen manufacturer’s instructions.
- Monitor blood glucose regularly as advised by your healthcare provider and never change your dose or insulin type without medical guidance.
- If you miss a dose around mealtime, monitor your blood sugar and contact your doctor or follow your diabetes action plan; never double inject to compensate for a missed dose without advice.
Clinical Benefits:
- Provides rapid onset blood glucose control around meals, helping to reduce postprandial hyperglycemia.
- Supports overall glycemic control when used as part of a basal-bolus insulin regimen, helping to maintain blood glucose within target ranges.
- Helps reduce the risk of diabetes-related complications such as neuropathy, nephropathy, retinopathy, and cardiovascular events when used consistently and correctly.
- Flexible dosing timing (immediately before or shortly after meals) offers convenience and may improve adherence to insulin therapy.
Warnings & Contraindications:
- For use only under medical supervision. This is a prescription medicine and should not be used without a doctor’s recommendation and regular follow-up.
- Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity or allergy to insulin aspart or any of the excipients in the formulation.
- Do not use during episodes of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). If you experience symptoms of hypoglycemia, treat it immediately and postpone the injection until advised by your doctor.
- Use with caution in patients with kidney or liver impairment, adrenal, pituitary, or thyroid disorders, as insulin requirements may change.
- Dose adjustments may be required during illness, stress, changes in diet, physical activity, or when switching from other insulin types or brands. Always consult your healthcare provider before making changes.
- Alcohol, some medications (such as beta-blockers, corticosteroids, oral antidiabetics, ACE inhibitors, diuretics, and others) can affect blood glucose levels and insulin requirements. Inform your doctor about all medicines and supplements you are taking.
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Insulin therapy is often required and may be adjusted during pregnancy and lactation. Use only under strict medical supervision and frequent blood glucose monitoring.
- Driving and operating machinery: Hypoglycemia can impair concentration and reaction time. Take precautions to avoid hypoglycemia before driving or using machines and always carry a source of fast-acting carbohydrate.
- Never share your insulin pen, cartridges, or needles with others to prevent cross-infection.
- Consult your doctor before use if pregnant, nursing, taking other medications, or have any medical conditions including heart disease, kidney disease, liver disease, or hormonal disorders.
- Keep out of reach of children.
Side Effects:
- Common: Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) – symptoms may include sweating, shakiness, dizziness, headache, hunger, palpitations, confusion, blurred vision, and in severe cases, loss of consciousness or seizures. This is the most frequent side effect and requires immediate treatment with fast-acting carbohydrates and medical attention if severe.
- Local reactions at the injection site: Redness, swelling, itching, or pain may occur, usually mild and transient.
- Lipodystrophy or skin thickening/indentation at injection sites if the same site is used repeatedly.
- Allergic reactions: Rash, itching, or more rarely, severe generalized allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) may occur. Seek urgent medical attention if you experience difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, or severe rash.
- Edema (fluid retention) and temporary vision changes may occur when starting or intensifying insulin therapy.
- If you experience persistent or severe side effects, contact your doctor or pharmacist immediately.
