About the product

Suprax 100 Mg Syrup 60 ml

Description:

Suprax 100 mg Syrup 60 ml is an oral prescription antibiotic medicine containing cefixime, a third-generation cephalosporin. It is used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections of the respiratory tract, ear, urinary tract, and certain sexually transmitted infections caused by susceptible organisms. Suprax works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to the death of the bacteria and helping relieve infection-related symptoms such as fever, sore throat, ear pain, cough, and painful urination. This suspension is commonly prescribed for children and adults who require a liquid oral antibiotic formulation.

Indications:

  • Tonsillitis and pharyngitis caused by susceptible bacteria (e.g., Streptococcus pyogenes).
  • Acute otitis media (middle ear infection), especially in children.
  • Acute bronchitis and acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis.
  • Uncomplicated urinary tract infections (UTIs), including cystitis.
  • Uncomplicated gonorrhea caused by susceptible Neisseria gonorrhoeae (as directed by a physician).
  • Other infections of the respiratory and genitourinary tract caused by susceptible gram-positive and gram-negative organisms, including many beta-lactamase–producing bacteria.
  • Relief of infection-related symptoms such as fever, sore throat, ear pain, productive cough, burning urination, and general malaise associated with bacterial infections.

Active Ingredients / Key Components:

  • Cefixime – 100 mg per 5 ml oral suspension (reconstituted).
  • Excipients (inactive ingredients) – may include sweeteners, suspending agents, flavoring agents, and preservatives (exact composition and concentrations , please check the product leaflet or the manufacturer’s official website; refer to the package insert for full list).

Dosage & Administration / How to Use:

  • Suprax 100 mg/5 ml suspension is for oral use only and should be taken exactly as prescribed by your doctor.
  • Reconstitution (if supplied as dry powder): Add the recommended amount of clean drinking water as indicated on the bottle label, in two portions, shaking well after each addition until a uniform suspension is formed. Shake the bottle well before each dose. (Follow the specific instructions on the product packaging.)
  • Adults and adolescents: Typical total daily dose of cefixime is 200–400 mg per day, given as a single dose or divided into two doses (e.g., 100–200 mg every 12 hours), according to the severity and type of infection, as directed by the physician.
  • Children: The dose is usually based on body weight (commonly 8 mg/kg/day given once daily or 4 mg/kg every 12 hours), not exceeding the maximum adult dose. Always follow pediatric dosing prescribed by the doctor.
  • May be taken with or without food. Taking it with food can help reduce potential stomach discomfort.
  • Use a proper measuring spoon or oral syringe to ensure accurate dosing. Do not use household teaspoons.
  • Duration of treatment generally ranges from 5 to 10 days, depending on the infection type and clinical response. For streptococcal infections, a minimum of 10 days of therapy may be recommended.
  • Do not stop taking Suprax earlier than prescribed, even if you feel better, as this may lead to incomplete eradication of bacteria and antibiotic resistance.
  • If a dose is missed, take it as soon as you remember unless it is almost time for the next dose. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one.

Clinical Benefits:

  • Provides broad-spectrum antibacterial activity against many gram-positive and gram-negative pathogens, including beta-lactamase–producing strains.
  • Effectively treats common respiratory tract infections such as tonsillitis, pharyngitis, bronchitis, and otitis media, helping to reduce fever, sore throat, cough, and ear pain.
  • Helps resolve uncomplicated urinary tract infections and gonorrhea by eliminating the causative bacteria.
  • Oral suspension form is convenient and suitable for children and patients who have difficulty swallowing tablets or capsules.

Warnings & Contraindications:

  • Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to cefixime, other cephalosporins, or any component of the formulation.
  • Use with caution in patients with a history of severe hypersensitivity (e.g., anaphylaxis) to penicillins or other beta-lactam antibiotics, as cross-sensitivity may occur.
  • Use with caution in patients with renal impairment; dose adjustment may be required. Consult your doctor for appropriate dosing.
  • Prolonged use may result in overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms, including fungi. If superinfection occurs, appropriate therapy should be instituted.
  • Antibiotic-associated diarrhea and pseudomembranous colitis have been reported with nearly all antibacterial agents, including cefixime. If severe, persistent diarrhea or abdominal cramps occur, discontinue the drug and contact a doctor immediately.
  • Use in pregnancy and breastfeeding only if clearly needed and under medical supervision. Discuss potential risks and benefits with your healthcare provider.
  • May interfere with some laboratory tests (e.g., urine glucose tests, Coombs test). Inform the laboratory and your doctor that you are taking cefixime.
  • Do not use this medication without medical advice or for viral infections such as the common cold or flu, as it is ineffective against viruses.
  • Consult your doctor before use if you have kidney disease, gastrointestinal disease (especially colitis), or a history of allergic reactions to antibiotics.
  • Keep out of reach of children.

Side Effects:
  • Common side effects: Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, loose stools, indigestion, headache, dizziness, and mild skin rash.
  • Less common/rare side effects: Allergic reactions such as itching, hives, swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing; severe skin reactions; blood count changes; liver enzyme elevations.
  • Stop taking Suprax and seek immediate medical attention if you experience signs of a serious allergic reaction (rash, itching/swelling especially of the face/tongue/throat, severe dizziness, trouble breathing) or severe, persistent diarrhea with or without blood or mucus.
  • If any side effect persists or worsens, or if you notice any unusual symptoms, contact your doctor or pharmacist promptly.
