Tarivid 200 Mg 10 Tablets
Description:
Tarivid 200 mg 10 tablets is a prescription systemic antibiotic medicine containing ofloxacin, a second-generation fluoroquinolone. It is used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections affecting the respiratory tract, urinary tract, skin and soft tissues, bones and joints, and certain genital and abdominal infections. Tarivid works by inhibiting bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, enzymes essential for bacterial DNA replication and protein synthesis, leading to rapid bacterial cell death and clinical improvement. It is intended for adult use under medical supervision.
Indications:
- Acute and chronic bronchitis and other lower respiratory tract infections caused by susceptible bacteria
- Community-acquired pneumonia and other bacterial pneumonia
- Uncomplicated and complicated urinary tract infections (UTIs), including cystitis and pyelonephritis
- Bone and joint infections caused by susceptible organisms
- Intra-abdominal infections, as part of appropriate combination therapy when indicated
- Uncomplicated gonorrhoea (as directed by a physician and according to local guidelines)
- Ear, nose and throat (ENT) infections such as otitis and sinus-related bacterial infections
- Skin and soft tissue infections, including infected wounds and cellulitis
- Typhoid fever and other systemic infections due to susceptible organisms
- Prostatitis and other bacterial infections of the male genital tract
- Gynaecological infections caused by susceptible bacteria (as part of appropriate regimen)
- Other systemic bacterial infections where ofloxacin is indicated and prescribed by a doctor
Active Ingredients / Key Components:
- Ofloxacin – 200 mg per film-coated tablet
- Excipients: film-coating and tablet core excipients (such as fillers, binders, disintegrants, and colorants). Exact excipient list and concentrations , please check the product leaflet or the manufacturer’s official website; please refer to the official package leaflet for full details.
Dosage & Administration / How to Use:
- Tarivid 200 mg tablets are for oral use only and must be taken exactly as prescribed by your doctor.
- Typical adult doses for systemic infections range from 200 mg to 400 mg daily, given once or twice daily depending on the type and severity of infection, kidney function, and clinical response. The exact dose, frequency and duration are determined by the prescribing physician.
- Tablets should be swallowed whole with a sufficient amount of water. Do not crush or chew the film-coated tablets.
- Tarivid can usually be taken with or without food. If it causes stomach upset, taking it after a light meal may help.
- Avoid taking Tarivid at the same time as antacids, sucralfate, or supplements containing iron, zinc, magnesium, or aluminum, as these can reduce absorption. If needed, separate doses by at least 2 hours before or 4 hours after such products.
- Duration of treatment typically ranges from 3 to 14 days, and may be longer for certain infections such as bone, joint, or prostatitis infections. Do not stop treatment early even if you feel better, unless instructed by your doctor.
- If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless it is almost time for the next dose. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed dose.
- Use in children and adolescents is generally not recommended unless specifically prescribed by a specialist due to the risk of joint and cartilage effects.
Clinical Benefits:
- Provides broad-spectrum antibacterial activity against many Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria responsible for respiratory, urinary, skin, and systemic infections.
- Rapid bactericidal action by inhibiting bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, helping to control infection and reduce symptoms such as fever, pain, and inflammation.
- Oral tablet formulation allows convenient systemic treatment without the need for injections in many cases, supporting outpatient management of infections.
- Effective in treating complicated infections (such as complicated UTIs, prostatitis, and some intra-abdominal infections) when used according to current medical guidelines.
Warnings & Contraindications:
- Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity or allergy to ofloxacin, other fluoroquinolones, or any component of the formulation.
- Fluoroquinolones, including ofloxacin, have been associated with tendinitis and tendon rupture (especially the Achilles tendon), sometimes occurring within 48 hours of starting treatment and even months after discontinuation. Risk is higher in elderly patients, those on corticosteroids, and patients with kidney, heart, or lung transplants. Stop the medicine and contact your doctor immediately if you experience tendon pain, swelling, or inflammation.
- Use with caution in patients with a history of seizures, epilepsy, or other central nervous system (CNS) disorders, as fluoroquinolones may lower the seizure threshold.
- May cause QT interval prolongation on ECG. Use with caution in patients with known QT prolongation, uncorrected electrolyte disturbances, heart failure, bradycardia, or those taking other QT-prolonging drugs.
- Use with caution in patients with impaired kidney function; dose adjustment may be required. Inform your doctor if you have kidney disease or are on dialysis.
- May cause photosensitivity reactions. Avoid excessive sunlight or UV exposure and use appropriate sun protection during treatment.
- Serious, potentially irreversible adverse reactions affecting tendons, muscles, joints, nerves, and the central nervous system have been reported with fluoroquinolones. Discontinue and seek medical advice if you experience neuropathic symptoms such as pain, burning, tingling, numbness, or weakness.
- Not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless clearly needed and prescribed by a doctor, due to limited safety data and potential effects on developing cartilage.
- Consult your doctor before use if pregnant, nursing, taking other medications (especially antiarrhythmics, antipsychotics, tricyclic antidepressants, corticosteroids, antiepileptics, anticoagulants, or antidiabetic agents), or if you have medical conditions such as kidney disease, liver disease, heart disease, diabetes, or a history of tendon disorders.
- Avoid driving or operating machinery if you experience dizziness, drowsiness, visual disturbances, or other CNS effects.
- Antibiotics should not be used for viral infections such as the common cold or influenza.
- Keep out of reach of children.
Side Effects:
- Common side effects may include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, indigestion, headache, dizziness, or insomnia.
- Less common side effects can include rash, itching, photosensitivity (increased sensitivity to sunlight), taste disturbances, or mild elevation of liver enzymes.
- Serious side effects (seek immediate medical attention) may include severe allergic reactions (swelling of face, lips, tongue or throat, difficulty breathing), severe skin reactions, tendon pain or rupture, seizures, severe or persistent diarrhea (which may indicate Clostridioides difficile-associated colitis), irregular heartbeat, severe mood or behavioral changes, or signs of liver problems (yellowing of skin or eyes, dark urine, severe fatigue).
- If any side effect is severe, persistent, or concerning, stop the medication and contact your doctor or pharmacist promptly.
