About the product

Tobrex 0.3% Eye Drops 5 ml

Description:

Tobrex 0.3% Eye Drops 5 ml is a prescription ophthalmic antibiotic medicine containing tobramycin, an aminoglycoside antibiotic, used for the treatment of bacterial eye infections. It is formulated as sterile eye drops for topical use in the eye to help eliminate susceptible bacteria, relieve signs of infection such as redness, discharge, and irritation, and prevent complications. Tobrex is commonly used in adults and children under medical supervision for conditions like bacterial conjunctivitis and blepharitis, and as prophylaxis after eye procedures when indicated by a doctor.

Indications:

  • Treatment of external bacterial eye infections caused by susceptible organisms, such as bacterial conjunctivitis (pink eye).
  • Treatment of blepharitis (bacterial infection of the eyelid margins) due to sensitive bacteria.
  • Treatment of other superficial ocular infections of the conjunctiva and cornea caused by tobramycin-sensitive gram-negative and some gram-positive bacteria (e.g., Pseudomonas, Proteus, Staphylococcus, Klebsiella, E. coli, Serratia, Enterobacter), as directed by the physician.
  • Adjunctive use for prevention of infection after ocular surgery or eye injury when prescribed by an ophthalmologist.
  • Relief of infection-related symptoms such as eye redness, swelling, discharge, foreign body sensation, and discomfort associated with bacterial eye infections.

Active Ingredients / Key Components:

  • Tobramycin – 0.3% (3 mg/ml) ophthalmic solution.
  • Excipients (non-active ingredients) typically include buffering agents, stabilizers, and preservatives suitable for ophthalmic use; exact excipient list and concentrations , please check the product leaflet or the manufacturer’s official website and should be checked on the package insert.

Dosage & Administration / How to Use:

  • For adults and children: The usual dose for mild to moderate eye infections is 1–2 drops in the affected eye(s) every 4 hours, or as directed by the doctor.
  • For severe infections, the dose may be increased initially to 2 drops in the affected eye(s) every hour, then reduced gradually as the infection improves, according to medical advice.
  • Wash hands thoroughly before and after using the eye drops.
  • Shake the bottle gently if recommended on the label, then remove the cap without touching the dropper tip.
  • Tilt your head back, gently pull down the lower eyelid to form a small pocket, and instill the prescribed number of drops into the conjunctival sac. Avoid touching the eye, eyelids, or any surface with the dropper tip to keep the solution sterile.
  • Close the eye gently for 1–2 minutes and press lightly on the inner corner of the eye (near the nose) to reduce systemic absorption, if advised by your doctor.
  • If using other ophthalmic medications (drops or ointments), leave at least 5–10 minutes between products. Usually, eye drops are applied before eye ointments.
  • Use for the full duration prescribed, even if symptoms improve earlier, to prevent recurrence or resistance.
  • Do not wear contact lenses during active eye infection and while using Tobrex unless specifically approved by your eye specialist.
  • Use only in the eyes. Do not inject or swallow.

Clinical Benefits:

  • Provides targeted antibacterial action against a wide range of gram-negative and some gram-positive bacteria responsible for common eye infections.
  • Helps rapidly reduce signs and symptoms of bacterial conjunctivitis and blepharitis, such as redness, discharge, irritation, and swelling.
  • Supports protection of the cornea and ocular surface by controlling infection, thereby reducing the risk of complications and vision-threatening damage.
  • Topical eye drop formulation allows high local concentrations at the infection site with minimal systemic absorption when used correctly.

Warnings & Contraindications:

  • Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity or allergy to tobramycin, other aminoglycoside antibiotics, or any component of the formulation.
  • For ophthalmic use only. Do not inject, inhale, or ingest.
  • Prolonged use may lead to overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms, including fungi. If infection does not improve or worsens, stop use and consult your doctor.
  • Use with caution in patients with a history of allergic reactions to antibiotics or with severe ocular surface disease; monitor closely.
  • If significant eye pain, vision changes, persistent redness, or swelling occur, discontinue use and seek medical advice immediately.
  • Avoid wearing contact lenses during treatment of an active eye infection. If contact lenses are allowed later, wait at least 15 minutes after instilling the drops before inserting lenses.
  • Consult your doctor before use if pregnant or breastfeeding. The doctor will weigh potential benefits and risks.
  • Systemic absorption is low, but caution is advised in patients with known kidney impairment or those receiving systemic aminoglycosides due to potential additive toxicity.
  • Do not share the bottle with others to avoid cross-contamination and spread of infection.
  • Consult your doctor before use if you are using other eye medications, have glaucoma, recent eye surgery, or chronic eye diseases.
  • Keep out of reach of children.

Side Effects:
  • Common side effects may include transient eye irritation, burning or stinging, redness, itching, tearing, or mild eyelid swelling after instillation.
  • Less common side effects can include eye discomfort, blurred vision immediately after application, or sensitivity reactions.
  • Rare but serious reactions may include severe allergic reactions, marked eyelid swelling, intense redness, or signs of hypersensitivity or toxicity to aminoglycosides; discontinue use and seek urgent medical attention if these occur.
  • If any unusual or persistent side effects appear, or if symptoms of infection do not improve within a few days, consult your doctor or pharmacist.
