About the product

Tobrin Drops

Description:

Tobrin 0.3% Eye Drops 5 ml is a prescription ophthalmic antibiotic solution containing tobramycin, an aminoglycoside antibiotic. It is used for the treatment and prevention of bacterial infections of the eye and its surrounding structures, such as conjunctivitis and blepharitis. Tobrin Drops act locally in the eye to inhibit bacterial protein synthesis, helping to rapidly control infection, reduce redness, discharge and discomfort, and prevent complications when used as directed by an eye care professional.

Indications:

  • Treatment of external ocular infections caused by susceptible bacteria, including conjunctivitis, blepharitis, and keratitis.
  • Infections due to susceptible organisms such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Proteus species, Staphylococcus species, Klebsiella, Escherichia coli, Serratia, and Enterobacter species affecting the eye.
  • Post-operative prophylaxis of bacterial eye infections as directed by an ophthalmologist.
  • Adjunctive therapy in other ocular surface infections where a topical aminoglycoside antibiotic is indicated.

Active Ingredients / Key Components:

  • Tobramycin 0.3% (3 mg/ml) – broad-spectrum aminoglycoside antibiotic for topical ophthalmic use.
  • Excipients (inactive ingredients) – may include buffering agents, stabilizers and preservatives suitable for ophthalmic solutions. Exact excipient list and concentrations , please check the product leaflet or the manufacturer’s official website; please refer to the product leaflet or packaging for full details.

Dosage & Administration / How to Use:

  • Usual adult and pediatric dose (as commonly used for ophthalmic tobramycin; follow your doctor’s exact instructions): 1–2 drops in the affected eye(s) every 4–6 hours.
  • In more severe infections, your doctor may recommend 1–2 drops every hour initially, then reduce the frequency as the infection improves.
  • Wash hands thoroughly before use. Avoid touching the dropper tip to any surface, including the eye or eyelids, to prevent contamination.
  • Administration steps: Tilt head back, gently pull down the lower eyelid to form a small pocket, hold the bottle above the eye, instill the prescribed number of drops, then close the eye gently for 1–2 minutes. Do not blink excessively or rub the eye.
  • If using other eye drops, wait at least 5–10 minutes between different ophthalmic medications. Eye ointments should generally be applied last.
  • Use for the full duration prescribed by your doctor, even if symptoms improve earlier, to prevent recurrence or resistance.
  • For ophthalmic use only. Do not inject or swallow. Do not use while wearing soft contact lenses unless specifically advised by your doctor.

Clinical Benefits:

  • Provides targeted antibacterial action against a wide range of gram-negative and some gram-positive bacteria causing eye infections.
  • Helps rapidly reduce signs and symptoms of ocular infection such as redness, discharge, swelling, irritation and discomfort.
  • Decreases the risk of complications and spread of infection by effectively inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis and causing bacterial cell death.
  • Convenient drop formulation for localized therapy in the eye, minimizing systemic exposure compared to oral or injectable antibiotics.

Warnings & Contraindications:

  • Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity or allergy to tobramycin, other aminoglycoside antibiotics, or any component of the formulation.
  • Use with caution in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to topical antibiotics, as cross-sensitivity may occur.
  • Prolonged use may result in overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms, including fungi. If superinfection occurs, appropriate therapy should be initiated.
  • Discontinue use and consult an ophthalmologist immediately if severe eye irritation, swelling, rash, or worsening of symptoms occurs.
  • Contact lens wear: Do not wear contact lenses during active eye infection unless specifically advised by your doctor. Remove lenses before instillation and wait at least 15 minutes before reinsertion if permitted.
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Consult your doctor before use if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
  • Systemic conditions: Although systemic absorption from topical ophthalmic use is low, consult your doctor if you have kidney disease, neuromuscular disorders (such as myasthenia gravis or Parkinson’s disease), or are receiving other aminoglycoside therapy.
  • Avoid driving or operating machinery if temporary blurred vision occurs after instillation until vision clears.
  • Consult your doctor before use if you are taking other medications, especially other topical ophthalmic products or systemic aminoglycosides.
  • Keep out of reach of children.

Side Effects:
  • Common side effects: Mild transient eye irritation, burning or stinging sensation after application, redness, itching, or eyelid swelling.
  • Less common side effects: Hypersensitivity reactions, conjunctival hyperemia, increased tearing, or eye discomfort.
  • Rare but serious side effects: Severe allergic reactions (swelling of face/eyelids, severe redness, intense pain, rash), or signs of superinfection (worsening redness, discharge, or vision changes). Stop use and seek medical attention immediately if these occur.
  • If you experience persistent blurred vision, severe eye pain, or no improvement/worsening of symptoms after a few days of treatment, consult your doctor promptly.
