Unizithrin 500 Mg
Description:
Unizithrin 500 mg is a prescription systemic antibiotic medicine containing azithromycin, a semi-synthetic macrolide of the azalide class. It is used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections affecting the respiratory tract, skin and soft tissues, and certain sexually transmitted and gastrointestinal infections. Azithromycin works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis, helping to stop the growth of susceptible bacteria and promote clinical recovery. Each capsule delivers 500 mg of azithromycin, providing convenient once-daily dosing for many infections.
Indications:
- Upper and lower respiratory tract infections, such as bronchitis, community-acquired pneumonia, pharyngitis and tonsillitis caused by susceptible organisms.
- Skin and soft tissue infections, including uncomplicated skin infections caused by susceptible bacteria.
- Typhoid fever (enteric fever) caused by susceptible strains of Salmonella typhi, as directed by a physician.
- Uncomplicated gonorrhoea (single-dose therapy as prescribed by a specialist).
- Granuloma inguinale (donovanosis), with continued treatment until complete healing of lesions.
- Chancroid and chlamydial urethritis (including non-gonococcal urethritis) as a single-dose regimen where appropriate.
- Prophylaxis of disseminated Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) infections in high-risk patients, as part of a physician-directed regimen.
- Treatment or secondary prophylaxis of MAC infections in combination with other antimycobacterial agents.
- Other infections caused by azithromycin-susceptible organisms as determined by a healthcare professional.
Active Ingredients / Key Components:
- Azithromycin – 500 mg per capsule
- Other inactive ingredients/excipients: Not specified in the available information (For full ingredient information, please check the product leaflet or the manufacturer’s official website.).
Dosage & Administration / How to Use:
- Use only as prescribed by a physician. Dosage and duration depend on the type and severity of infection and patient factors.
- General administration: Take the capsule orally with a full glass of water. It may be taken with or without food; if stomach upset occurs, taking it with food may help.
- Respiratory tract, skin and soft tissue infections (adults): 500 mg once daily for 3 days, or 500 mg on day 1 followed by 250 mg once daily on days 2 to 5, as directed by the doctor.
- Typhoid fever (adults): 500 mg once daily for 7 days, or as recommended by the treating physician.
- Uncomplicated gonorrhoea (adults): 2 g azithromycin as a single oral dose, usually under specialist supervision.
- Granuloma inguinale (adults): Initial dose of 1 g, then 500 mg once daily until all lesions have healed completely, as directed by the physician.
- Chancroid / Chlamydial urethritis (adults): 1 g azithromycin as a single oral dose.
- Prophylaxis of disseminated MAC infections (adults): 1.2 g once weekly, as part of a comprehensive regimen and under specialist care.
- Treatment or secondary prophylaxis of MAC infections: 500 mg once daily in combination with other antimycobacterial agents, as prescribed.
- Swallow capsules whole; do not crush or chew.
- If a dose is missed, take it as soon as remembered unless it is almost time for the next dose. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one.
- Complete the full course of therapy even if symptoms improve early, to reduce the risk of recurrence and antibiotic resistance.
- Not recommended for self-medication. Pediatric dosing, elderly dosing, and dosing in renal or hepatic impairment must be determined by a doctor.
Clinical Benefits:
- Provides broad-spectrum antibacterial activity against many common respiratory, skin, and sexually transmitted pathogens.
- Once-daily dosing and short treatment courses for many indications support better patient compliance.
- Achieves high tissue concentrations and has a long half-life (approximately 68 hours), allowing sustained antibacterial effect.
- Useful alternative for patients allergic to certain other antibiotics (e.g., some beta-lactams), when deemed appropriate by a physician.
- Effective in both treatment and prophylaxis of specific opportunistic infections such as MAC when used as part of combination therapy.
Warnings & Contraindications:
- Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to azithromycin, other macrolide or ketolide antibiotics, or any component of the formulation.
- Use with caution in patients with pre-existing liver disease or hepatic impairment; cases of severe hepatotoxicity have been reported with azithromycin.
- Use with caution in patients with renal impairment, significant cardiac disease, history of QT prolongation, arrhythmias, or those taking other drugs that prolong the QT interval.
- May cause QT interval prolongation and risk of torsades de pointes; monitor high-risk patients closely.
- Use with caution in patients with myasthenia gravis, as macrolides may exacerbate symptoms.
- May interact with other medications (e.g., certain antiarrhythmics, warfarin, digoxin, ergot derivatives); inform your doctor about all medicines and supplements you are taking.
- Antibiotic use can lead to overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms, including fungi; if superinfection occurs, appropriate therapy should be instituted.
- Clostridioides difficile–associated diarrhea (CDAD) has been reported with nearly all antibacterial agents; consider this diagnosis in patients presenting with diarrhea following antibiotic use.
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Use only if clearly needed and prescribed by a doctor after assessing benefit–risk. Azithromycin is excreted in breast milk.
- Do not use for viral infections such as common cold or influenza.
- Do not share this medication with others, even if they have similar symptoms.
- Consult your doctor before use if pregnant, nursing, taking medications, or have medical conditions such as liver disease, kidney disease, heart rhythm disorders, or myasthenia gravis.
- Keep out of reach of children.
Side Effects:
- Common side effects: Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, loose stools, flatulence, indigestion, headache, dizziness, and mild skin rash.
- Less common side effects: Taste disturbances, fatigue, photosensitivity reactions, transient changes in liver enzymes, and allergic reactions.
- Serious side effects (seek immediate medical attention): Severe allergic reactions (angioedema, anaphylaxis), severe skin reactions (Stevens–Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis), severe or persistent diarrhea, signs of liver problems (yellowing of skin or eyes, dark urine, severe fatigue, right upper abdominal pain), chest pain, palpitations, fainting, or signs of arrhythmia.
- If any side effects are severe, persistent, or concerning, stop the medication and contact your doctor or pharmacist promptly.
