About the product

Zithrokan 500 Mg 3 Capsules

Description:

Zithrokan 500 mg 3 Capsules is a prescription systemic antibiotic medicine containing azithromycin, a semi-synthetic macrolide of the azalide class. It is used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections, particularly of the respiratory tract, skin and soft tissues, and certain sexually transmitted infections. Azithromycin works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis, helping to stop the growth of susceptible bacteria and resolve infection-related symptoms such as fever, sore throat, cough, and inflammatory lesions. This pack contains 3 hard gelatin capsules, each with 500 mg azithromycin, suitable for short-course once-daily therapy as directed by a physician.

Indications:

  • Treatment of mild to moderate respiratory tract infections caused by susceptible organisms (e.g., acute bronchitis, community-acquired pneumonia, pharyngitis, tonsillitis, sinusitis).
  • Treatment of skin and soft tissue infections (e.g., cellulitis, impetigo, infected dermatoses) caused by susceptible bacteria.
  • Treatment of certain sexually transmitted infections such as uncomplicated genital infections due to Chlamydia trachomatis (e.g., chlamydial urethritis, cervicitis), as directed by a physician.
  • May be used as part of therapy for uncomplicated gonorrhoea, chancroid, granuloma inguinale and other genital infections when prescribed and combined appropriately according to guidelines.
  • May be used for typhoid fever and prophylaxis or treatment of disseminated Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) infections in specific patients, according to specialist recommendation.
  • Indicated only for bacterial infections; it is not effective for viral infections such as common cold or influenza.

Active Ingredients / Key Components:

  • Azithromycin – 500 mg per capsule (macrolide antibiotic of the azalide class)
  • Other capsule excipients: Not specified in available information.

Dosage & Administration / How to Use:

  • Use exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not self-medicate or change the dose without medical advice.
  • Adults – common regimens (for guidance only; final regimen is determined by the physician):
    • Respiratory tract, skin and soft tissue infections: 500 mg once daily for 3 days, or 500 mg on day 1 followed by 250 mg once daily on days 2 to 5.
    • Typhoid fever: 500 mg once daily for 7 days.
    • Uncomplicated gonorrhoea: 2 g single oral dose (usually in combination or according to local guidelines).
    • Granuloma inguinale: Initial 1 g dose, then 500 mg once daily until all lesions have healed completely.
    • Chancroid / chlamydial urethritis: 1 g single oral dose, as directed by a physician.
    • Prophylaxis of disseminated MAC infections: 1.2 g once weekly, as part of a specialist regimen.
    • Treatment or secondary prophylaxis of MAC infections: 500 mg once daily, administered with other antimycobacterial agents.
  • Administration: Swallow the capsule whole with a full glass of water. Do not crush or chew.
  • With or without food: Azithromycin can generally be taken with or without food; however, taking it with food may reduce gastrointestinal discomfort. Follow your doctor’s specific instructions.
  • Duration of therapy: Complete the full prescribed course even if symptoms improve earlier, to prevent relapse and antibiotic resistance.
  • Missed dose: If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless it is almost time for the next dose. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one.
  • Not recommended for children without pediatric medical supervision; dosing in children is weight-based and must be determined by a doctor.

Clinical Benefits:

  • Provides broad-spectrum antibacterial activity against many common respiratory, skin, and genital pathogens.
  • Once-daily dosing and short treatment courses (often 3–5 days) improve patient convenience and adherence compared to some other antibiotics.
  • High tissue penetration and long half-life (approximately 68 hours) allow sustained antibacterial effect at the site of infection.
  • Helps rapidly reduce infection-related symptoms such as fever, sore throat, productive cough, and inflammatory skin lesions when the pathogen is susceptible.
  • Useful option in patients allergic to certain other antibiotics (e.g., penicillins), when deemed appropriate by a physician.

Warnings & Contraindications:

  • Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to azithromycin, other macrolide or ketolide antibiotics, or any component of the formulation.
  • Use with caution in patients with pre-existing liver disease or impaired hepatic function, as azithromycin is primarily eliminated via the liver.
  • Use with caution in patients with kidney impairment, significant cardiac disease, history of arrhythmias, or known QT interval prolongation, and in those taking other QT-prolonging drugs.
  • May cause Clostridioides difficile–associated diarrhea; if severe or persistent diarrhea occurs, contact a doctor immediately.
  • May interact with other medicines (e.g., certain antiarrhythmics, warfarin, digoxin, ergot derivatives, some antacids). Inform your doctor and pharmacist about all medications and supplements you are taking.
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Use only if clearly needed and prescribed by a doctor after assessing risks and benefits.
  • Do not use for viral infections such as common cold or flu; inappropriate use contributes to antibiotic resistance.
  • Do not share this medication with others, even if they have similar symptoms.
  • Consult your doctor before use if pregnant, nursing, taking medications, or have medical conditions such as liver disease, kidney disease, heart rhythm disorders, myasthenia gravis, or electrolyte disturbances.
  • Keep out of reach of children.

Side Effects:
  • Common side effects: Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, flatulence, indigestion, headache, dizziness, and mild skin rash.
  • Less common side effects: Changes in liver enzymes, taste disturbances, fatigue, allergic reactions (itching, hives), and photosensitivity.
  • Serious side effects (seek immediate medical attention): Severe allergic reactions (swelling of face, lips, tongue or throat, difficulty breathing), severe or persistent diarrhea, signs of liver problems (yellowing of skin or eyes, dark urine, severe fatigue), chest pain, palpitations, or signs of heart rhythm disturbances.
  • If you experience any unusual or persistent symptoms while taking Zithrokan, contact your doctor or pharmacist promptly.
