Atorstat 20 Mg Tablets
Description:
Atorstat 20 mg tablets are a prescription lipid-lowering medicine containing atorvastatin, a member of the statin class of drugs. It is used to reduce elevated cholesterol and triglyceride levels and to help prevent serious cardiovascular events such as heart attack and stroke in high-risk patients. Atorstat 20 mg is taken orally and is typically used as an adjunct to a cholesterol-lowering diet, lifestyle changes, and other cardiovascular risk management measures under medical supervision.
Indications:
- Primary prevention of coronary heart disease (CHD) in adults with multiple cardiovascular risk factors to reduce the risk of myocardial infarction (heart attack), stroke, angina, and the need for revascularization procedures.
- Secondary prevention in adults with established coronary heart disease to reduce the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, angina, and revascularization procedures.
- Reduction of cardiovascular events in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) as part of comprehensive cardiovascular risk management.
- Treatment of primary hypercholesterolemia (including heterozygous familial and non-familial) and mixed dyslipidemia as an adjunct to diet to reduce total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), apolipoprotein B (ApoB), and triglycerides, and to increase high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C).
- Treatment of homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia as an adjunct to other lipid-lowering treatments (such as LDL apheresis) or when such treatments are not available.
- Treatment of primary dysbetalipoproteinemia and/or hypertriglyceridemia as an adjunct to dietary therapy.
Active Ingredients / Key Components:
- Atorvastatin – 20 mg per tablet
- Other inactive ingredients/excipients: information not available in the provided data. Refer to the official package leaflet for full excipient list.
Dosage & Administration / How to Use:
- Adults (oral): Usual initial dose is 10 mg once daily. The 20 mg strength may be used as directed by the physician based on lipid profile and cardiovascular risk.
- Maximum daily dose: 80 mg per day, taken as a single daily dose, as prescribed by the doctor.
- Atorstat tablets can be taken with or without food, preferably at the same time each day.
- Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water; do not crush or chew unless advised otherwise by your healthcare provider.
- Therapy is usually long term. Do not stop taking Atorstat 20 mg without consulting your doctor, even if you feel well or your cholesterol levels improve.
- Use as an adjunct to a cholesterol-lowering diet, weight control, regular physical activity, and smoking cessation.
- If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless it is almost time for your next dose. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed dose.
- Dosage in special populations (elderly, hepatic or renal impairment) must be determined and adjusted only by a physician.
Clinical Benefits:
- Helps significantly lower LDL ("bad") cholesterol, total cholesterol, and triglyceride levels when used with an appropriate diet.
- Increases HDL ("good") cholesterol, contributing to a healthier lipid profile and improved cardiovascular protection.
- Reduces the risk of major cardiovascular events such as myocardial infarction, stroke, angina, and the need for revascularization procedures in high-risk patients.
- Provides effective lipid control in conditions such as primary hypercholesterolemia, mixed dyslipidemia, familial hypercholesterolemia, and hypertriglyceridemia.
- Supports long-term cardiovascular health as part of a comprehensive risk reduction strategy including diet, exercise, and lifestyle modification.
Warnings & Contraindications:
- Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to atorvastatin or any component of the formulation.
- Contraindicated in patients with active liver disease or unexplained persistent elevations of serum transaminases.
- Contraindicated during pregnancy and in women who are breastfeeding. Women of childbearing potential should use effective contraception during treatment.
- Use with caution in patients with a history of liver disease, heavy alcohol use, renal impairment, hypothyroidism, or a personal/family history of hereditary muscle disorders.
- Risk of myopathy and rhabdomyolysis: report any unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness, especially if accompanied by malaise or fever, to your doctor immediately.
- Periodic monitoring of liver function tests and lipid profile is recommended as directed by your physician.
- May interact with certain medicines such as strong CYP3A4 inhibitors (e.g., some antifungals, macrolide antibiotics), certain antivirals, other lipid-lowering agents (e.g., fibrates, niacin), and immunosuppressants. Inform your doctor about all medicines and supplements you are taking.
- Consult your doctor before use if pregnant, nursing, planning pregnancy, taking other medications, or if you have medical conditions such as liver disease, kidney disease, diabetes, thyroid disorders, or muscle disorders.
- Do not consume excessive alcohol while taking Atorstat 20 mg as this may increase the risk of liver problems.
- Keep out of reach of children.
Side Effects:
- Common side effects may include headache, nausea, abdominal pain, indigestion, diarrhea, constipation, joint pain, or mild muscle pain.
- Less common but serious side effects include myopathy, rhabdomyolysis (severe muscle breakdown), liver enzyme elevations, jaundice, dark urine, severe abdominal pain, or allergic reactions (rash, itching, swelling, difficulty breathing).
- Stop taking the medication and seek immediate medical attention if you experience severe muscle pain or weakness, especially with fever or dark-colored urine, signs of liver problems (yellowing of skin or eyes, persistent nausea, fatigue), or any signs of a serious allergic reaction.
- Not all possible side effects are listed. Refer to the patient information leaflet and consult your healthcare provider if you notice any unusual or persistent symptoms.
