About the product

Augmentin 312 Mg Syrup 5 ml

Description:

Augmentin 312 mg/5 ml syrup is a prescription systemic antibiotic medicine containing amoxicillin and clavulanic acid, belonging to the penicillin class. It is formulated as an oral suspension commonly used in children and adults who have difficulty swallowing tablets, for the treatment of a wide range of bacterial infections caused by beta-lactamase–producing organisms that are resistant to amoxicillin alone. Augmentin works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis (amoxicillin) while clavulanic acid blocks beta-lactamase enzymes, restoring and enhancing the antibacterial activity against resistant strains. It is used under medical supervision to treat respiratory, ear, sinus, skin, and urinary tract infections.

Indications:

  • Lower respiratory tract infections, including bronchitis and pneumonia, caused by beta-lactamase–producing isolates of Haemophilus influenzae and Moraxella catarrhalis.
  • Acute bacterial otitis media (middle ear infection) caused by beta-lactamase–producing isolates of H. influenzae and M. catarrhalis.
  • Acute bacterial sinusitis caused by beta-lactamase–producing isolates of H. influenzae and M. catarrhalis.
  • Skin and skin structure infections caused by beta-lactamase–producing isolates of Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Klebsiella species.
  • Urinary tract infections (UTIs), including cystitis and pyelonephritis, caused by beta-lactamase–producing isolates of E. coli, Klebsiella species, and Enterobacter species.
  • Other susceptible infections as determined by culture and sensitivity testing and as directed by a physician.
  • Indicated only for bacterial infections; not effective for viral infections such as common cold or influenza.

Active Ingredients / Key Components:

  • Amoxicillin (as amoxicillin trihydrate) – 250 mg per 5 ml oral suspension (approximate standard strength for Augmentin 312 mg/5 ml; exact concentration may vary by market and pack, please refer to the local package insert for precise values).
  • Clavulanic acid (as potassium clavulanate) – 62.5 mg per 5 ml oral suspension (approximate standard strength for Augmentin 312 mg/5 ml; exact concentration may vary by market and pack, please refer to the local package insert for precise values).
  • Total combined strength – 312.5 mg per 5 ml (commonly expressed as 312 mg/5 ml).
  • Pharmaceutical form – powder for oral suspension to be reconstituted with water to a final volume (typically 80 ml bottle; refer to label).
  • Excipients: may include sucrose, flavoring agents, suspending agents, and preservatives. Full excipient list and exact concentrations , please check the product leaflet or the manufacturer’s official website; please check the official package leaflet.

Dosage & Administration / How to Use:

  • Use only as prescribed by a physician. Dosage is usually based on body weight, type, and severity of infection, and kidney function.
  • Typical pediatric dosing (example, not a substitute for medical advice): total daily dose of amoxicillin component divided into 2–3 doses per day. The exact mg/kg/day and dosing interval must be determined by the doctor according to infection severity and local guidelines.
  • Adults and adolescents: the physician will determine the appropriate volume (in ml) and frequency based on the required amoxicillin/clavulanic acid dose and the syrup concentration.
  • Shake the bottle well before each use to ensure uniform suspension.
  • Measure the dose accurately using the provided measuring spoon or syringe; do not use household teaspoons.
  • Can be taken at the start of a meal to improve absorption and reduce potential gastrointestinal side effects.
  • Duration of treatment is usually 5–14 days depending on the infection; complete the full course even if symptoms improve earlier, unless the doctor advises otherwise.
  • If a dose is missed, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed one and continue with the regular schedule. Do not double the dose.
  • Do not stop treatment early or change the dose without consulting your doctor.

Clinical Benefits:

  • Broad-spectrum antibacterial activity against many common community-acquired pathogens, including beta-lactamase–producing strains.
  • Combination of amoxicillin with clavulanic acid helps overcome resistance due to beta-lactamase–producing bacteria, improving treatment success.
  • Effective in treating respiratory, ear, sinus, skin, and urinary tract infections when caused by susceptible organisms.
  • Oral syrup form is convenient for children and adults who have difficulty swallowing tablets, enabling accurate weight-based dosing.

Warnings & Contraindications:

  • Contraindicated in patients with a known hypersensitivity (allergy) to amoxicillin, clavulanic acid, other penicillins, or any component of the formulation.
  • Use with extreme caution in patients with a history of severe allergic reactions to beta-lactam antibiotics (penicillins, cephalosporins, carbapenems); serious reactions including anaphylaxis may occur.
  • Contraindicated in patients with a history of jaundice or liver dysfunction associated with amoxicillin/clavulanic acid use.
  • Monitor liver function in patients with pre-existing liver disease or those receiving prolonged therapy.
  • Use with caution in patients with renal impairment; dose adjustment and extended dosing intervals may be required.
  • Prolonged or repeated use may result in overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms, including fungi; if superinfection occurs, appropriate measures should be taken.
  • May reduce the effectiveness of oral contraceptives; additional non-hormonal contraceptive measures are advisable during treatment.
  • Consult your doctor before use if pregnant or breastfeeding. Augmentin should be used during pregnancy or lactation only if clearly needed and prescribed by a physician.
  • Use with caution in patients with a history of gastrointestinal disease, especially colitis associated with antibiotic use.
  • Consult your doctor before use if you are taking other medications, including anticoagulants (e.g., warfarin), allopurinol, methotrexate, or other antibiotics, due to possible interactions.
  • Not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease without medical supervision; it is a prescription antibiotic and must be used only as directed by a healthcare professional.
  • Keep out of reach of children.

  • If any side effects are severe, persistent, or concerning, stop the medication and contact your doctor or pharmacist promptly.
