About the product

Euthyrox 50Mcg 50 Tab

Description:

Euthyrox 50 mcg is a prescription thyroid hormone replacement medicine containing levothyroxine sodium, equivalent to the natural hormone thyroxine (T4) produced by the thyroid gland. It is used to treat and manage hypothyroidism and other thyroid-related disorders by restoring normal thyroid hormone levels in the body. Manufactured by Merck Limited - Egypt, Euthyrox 50 mcg tablets help improve metabolism, energy levels, and overall hormonal balance when used under medical supervision.

Indications:

  • Treatment of hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) of any cause, including primary, secondary, and tertiary hypothyroidism.
  • Management of goiter (enlarged thyroid gland), including diffuse or nodular goiter.
  • Treatment of chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis (Hashimoto’s thyroiditis) with resulting hypothyroidism.
  • Adjunct therapy in the management of myxedema coma and stupor (severe, life-threatening hypothyroidism) as part of intensive medical treatment.
  • Prevention of recurrence of goiter after surgical removal or radioiodine therapy in patients requiring thyroid hormone replacement.
  • Supportive therapy in certain thyroid cancers where suppression of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) is required (as directed by a specialist).
  • Relief of symptoms related to low thyroid hormone levels such as fatigue, weight gain, cold intolerance, dry skin, hair loss, constipation, and slowed heart rate (when confirmed as due to hypothyroidism).

Active Ingredients / Key Components:

  • Levothyroxine sodium – 50 mcg per tablet (synthetic thyroxine, T4).
  • Other inactive ingredients (excipients) are present to form the tablet, but detailed excipient composition and concentrations , please check the product leaflet or the manufacturer’s official website.

Dosage & Administration / How to Use:

  • Euthyrox 50 mcg is for oral use only and must be taken exactly as prescribed by your physician.
  • Usual administration: take the tablet once daily on an empty stomach, preferably in the morning, at least 30 minutes before breakfast, with a full glass of water.
  • Swallow the tablet whole; do not crush or chew unless your doctor advises otherwise. For patients who cannot swallow, the tablet may sometimes be dispersed in a small amount of water and taken immediately (follow physician or pharmacist instructions).
  • Initial dose, titration, and maintenance dose depend on age, body weight, severity and duration of hypothyroidism, presence of heart disease, and other medical conditions. Elderly patients and those with cardiovascular disease usually start at lower doses.
  • Do not change the dose, stop, or restart treatment without consulting your doctor, as thyroid hormone levels require careful monitoring and adjustment.
  • If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember on the same day. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.
  • Certain foods and medicines (such as iron, calcium, aluminum-containing antacids, cholestyramine, and some supplements) may reduce absorption of levothyroxine. Take Euthyrox at least 4 hours apart from such products, as advised by your doctor or pharmacist.
  • Regular blood tests (TSH, T4, and sometimes T3) are required to monitor response and adjust the dose.

Clinical Benefits:

  • Restores normal thyroid hormone levels in patients with hypothyroidism, helping to correct hormonal imbalance.
  • Improves metabolism and energy utilization, which may help reduce fatigue, weakness, and weight gain associated with low thyroid function.
  • Supports normal cardiovascular, nervous system, and gastrointestinal function by mimicking natural thyroxine (T4).
  • Helps relieve common hypothyroid symptoms such as cold intolerance, dry skin, hair thinning, constipation, and slowed thinking when used consistently and correctly.
  • Assists in reducing or preventing goiter enlargement and supports long-term thyroid health when indicated.
  • Provides stable, predictable thyroid hormone replacement due to its well-established pharmacological profile.

Warnings & Contraindications:

  • Contraindicated in untreated thyrotoxicosis (overactive thyroid) and in patients with uncorrected adrenal insufficiency.
  • Do not use for weight loss or obesity treatment in euthyroid (normal thyroid) patients. High doses may cause serious or life-threatening side effects, especially when combined with other weight-loss drugs.
  • Use with extreme caution in patients with cardiovascular disease (e.g., coronary artery disease, angina, arrhythmias, hypertension) and in elderly patients; dose adjustments must be gradual and closely monitored.
  • Inform your doctor if you have diabetes, adrenal or pituitary disorders, high blood pressure, osteoporosis, or any serious chronic illness before starting Euthyrox.
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding: levothyroxine is generally considered safe and is often essential during pregnancy and lactation, but dose requirements may change. Always use under close medical supervision and regular thyroid function monitoring.
  • Several medicines can interact with levothyroxine (e.g., iron and calcium supplements, antacids, anticonvulsants, oral contraceptives, anticoagulants like warfarin, some antidepressants). Inform your doctor and pharmacist about all medicines and supplements you are taking.
  • Not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease without proper medical evaluation and prescription.
  • Keep out of reach of children. Accidental ingestion, especially by children, may cause serious harm and requires immediate medical attention.
  • Do not switch between different brands or formulations of levothyroxine without consulting your doctor, as dose adjustments may be needed.

Side Effects:
  • When taken at the correct dose, Euthyrox is usually well tolerated. Side effects are most often due to overdose or sensitivity and resemble symptoms of hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid).
  • Common possible side effects of excessive dosing may include palpitations, rapid heartbeat, chest pain, nervousness, irritability, insomnia, tremors, headache, sweating, heat intolerance, weight loss, diarrhea, and menstrual irregularities.
  • Less common effects may include muscle weakness, cramps, hair thinning (especially at the start of therapy), and increased appetite.
  • Serious side effects such as severe chest pain, shortness of breath, irregular heartbeat, severe headache, or signs of allergic reaction (rash, itching, swelling of face or throat, severe dizziness, difficulty breathing) require immediate medical attention.
  • If you experience any persistent, unusual, or severe symptoms, contact your doctor promptly for dose review and further evaluation.

Storage Instructions:

Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep the blister pack or container tightly closed. Do not store above the temperature recommended on the package (typically below 25°c). Protect from heat and humidity, as levothyroxine is sensitive to environmental conditions. Keep out of reach of children.
