About the product

Tegretol Cr 200 Mg Tablets

Description:

Tegretol Cr 200 mg tablets are a prescription anticonvulsant medicine containing carbamazepine, formulated as controlled-release (CR) tablets for stable, long-acting effect. They are primarily used to treat epilepsy, control seizures, and manage certain types of nerve pain such as trigeminal neuralgia, as well as to help stabilize mood in bipolar (manic-depressive) disorder. Tegretol Cr 200 mg provides gradual and sustained release of carbamazepine to maintain more consistent blood levels, improve seizure control, and reduce dosing frequency under medical supervision.

Indications:

  • Epilepsy and seizure disorders, including generalized tonic-clonic seizures (grand mal epilepsy).
  • Complex partial seizures and psychomotor epilepsy.
  • Trigeminal neuralgia (severe facial nerve pain) for relief and prevention of painful attacks.
  • Manic-depressive illness (bipolar disorder), particularly acute mania and maintenance treatment as part of mood stabilization therapy.
  • Helps reduce frequency and intensity of seizures and neuropathic pain episodes as directed by a neurologist or psychiatrist.

Active Ingredients / Key Components:

  • Carbamazepine – 200 mg per controlled-release tablet.
  • Other excipients: controlled-release matrix and tablet core/shell ingredients (exact excipient list and concentrations , please check the product leaflet or the manufacturer’s official website; please refer to the official package leaflet).

Dosage & Administration / How to Use:

  • Tegretol Cr 200 mg tablets must be used exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Dosage is individualized based on age, condition, response, and other medicines.
  • Typical use in epilepsy (adults): treatment usually starts with a low dose, gradually increased by your doctor to the effective maintenance dose. The total daily dose is usually divided into 1–2 doses using controlled-release tablets. Exact dose and schedule must be determined by the treating physician.
  • Trigeminal neuralgia: therapy usually starts with a low dose, then titrated up until pain relief is achieved. Once pain is controlled, the dose may be reduced to the lowest effective maintenance dose, as advised by the doctor.
  • Bipolar disorder / acute mania: used as a mood stabilizer; dose and duration are determined by a psychiatrist, often in combination with other psychotropic medications.
  • Administration: Swallow the tablets whole with a glass of water. Do not crush, break, or chew the tablets, as this will affect the controlled-release properties.
  • Can be taken with or after food to help reduce stomach upset, unless your doctor advises otherwise.
  • Take at the same time(s) each day to maintain steady blood levels and optimal seizure control.
  • If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless it is almost time for the next dose. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed dose.
  • Do not stop taking Tegretol Cr suddenly without medical advice, as abrupt discontinuation can increase the risk of seizures or mood relapse. Any dose changes must be gradual and supervised by your doctor.

Clinical Benefits:

  • Helps control and reduce the frequency of generalized tonic-clonic and complex partial seizures.
  • Provides effective relief of trigeminal neuralgia by reducing abnormal nerve firing and severe facial pain attacks.
  • Acts as a mood stabilizer in bipolar disorder, helping to manage acute mania and prevent mood swings when used as part of a comprehensive treatment plan.
  • Controlled-release formulation offers more stable carbamazepine blood levels, potentially improving tolerability and reducing peak-related side effects compared with immediate-release forms.

Warnings & Contraindications:

  • Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to carbamazepine or to tricyclic compounds, or any component of the formulation.
  • Contraindicated in patients with a history of bone marrow depression or serious blood disorders (e.g., aplastic anemia, agranulocytosis).
  • Contraindicated in patients with atrioventricular (AV) block or a history of serious cardiac conduction disorders.
  • Do not use together with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) or within at least 14 days of stopping an MAOI, unless directed by a specialist.
  • Use with extreme caution in patients with liver disease, kidney impairment, heart disease, glaucoma, or a history of blood disorders.
  • May cause serious skin reactions (e.g., Stevens–Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis), especially in certain genetic populations. Stop the medicine and seek urgent medical help if rash, blistering, or peeling of skin or mucosa occurs.
  • May cause serious blood dyscrasias (e.g., agranulocytosis, aplastic anemia). Regular blood counts and liver function tests may be required as advised by your doctor.
  • Can cause dizziness, drowsiness, blurred vision, or lack of coordination. Do not drive, operate machinery, or perform tasks requiring alertness until you know how the medicine affects you.
  • Carbamazepine has many drug interactions (e.g., with other antiepileptics, some antibiotics, anticoagulants, antidepressants, oral contraceptives). Inform your doctor and pharmacist about all medicines, supplements, and herbal products you are taking.
  • May reduce the effectiveness of hormonal contraceptives. Ask your doctor about using additional or alternative non-hormonal contraception.
  • Alcohol may enhance drowsiness and other central nervous system effects; limit or avoid alcohol while taking Tegretol Cr.
  • Consult your doctor before use if pregnant, planning pregnancy, or nursing. Carbamazepine can affect the fetus and may pass into breast milk. Your doctor will weigh risks and benefits and may adjust dose or recommend alternative therapy.
  • Not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease without proper medical supervision.
  • Keep out of reach of children.
  • Always use under the supervision of a qualified healthcare professional and follow the prescribed dose strictly.

Side Effects:
  • Common side effects: dizziness, drowsiness, tiredness, headache, nausea, vomiting, dry mouth, unsteadiness, blurred or double vision, and mild skin rash. These may lessen as your body adjusts to the medicine.
  • Less common but important: confusion, agitation, tremor, changes in mood or behavior, difficulty with coordination, swelling of ankles or feet, or changes in blood pressure.
  • Serious side effects (seek immediate medical attention): signs of blood disorders (fever, sore throat, mouth ulcers, easy bruising or bleeding, unusual tiredness), severe or widespread rash, blistering or peeling skin, yellowing of skin or eyes (jaundice), dark urine, severe abdominal pain, severe headache, vision changes, chest pain, shortness of breath, or signs of allergic reaction (swelling of face/lips/tongue/throat, difficulty breathing).
  • If you experience worsening seizures, severe mood changes, suicidal thoughts, or any unusual symptoms, contact your doctor immediately.
