About the product

Xithrone Susp 200 Mg 25 ml

Description:

Xithrone susp 200 mg 25 ml is an oral antibiotic suspension containing azithromycin, a semi-synthetic macrolide of the azalide class. It is a systemic prescription medicine used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections, particularly of the respiratory tract, skin and soft tissues, and certain sexually transmitted and gastrointestinal infections. Azithromycin works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis, helping to stop the growth of susceptible bacteria and resolve infection-related symptoms such as fever, sore throat, cough, and skin inflammation. This suspension form is especially suitable for patients who have difficulty swallowing tablets and for precise weight-based dosing under medical supervision.

Indications:

  • Treatment of mild to moderate respiratory tract infections caused by susceptible organisms (such as pharyngitis, tonsillitis, sinusitis, bronchitis, and community-acquired pneumonia).
  • Treatment of skin and soft tissue infections (such as uncomplicated cellulitis, impetigo, and infected wounds) caused by susceptible bacteria.
  • Treatment of certain gastrointestinal infections, including typhoid fever, when prescribed by a physician.
  • Treatment of specific sexually transmitted infections (such as uncomplicated gonorrhoea, chancroid, granuloma inguinale, and chlamydial urethritis or cervicitis) as directed by a specialist.
  • Prevention and treatment (in combination with other drugs) of disseminated Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) infections in high-risk patients, as prescribed by a physician.
  • Other infections caused by azithromycin-susceptible organisms, according to your doctor’s assessment.

Active Ingredients / Key Components:

  • Azithromycin – 200 mg per 5 ml oral suspension (concentration based on product name and standard formulation).
  • Excipients (inactive ingredients) – may include sweeteners, suspending agents, stabilizers, and flavoring agents (exact excipient list and concentrations , please check the product leaflet or the manufacturer’s official website; refer to the package insert).

Dosage & Administration / How to Use:

  • Use only as prescribed by a physician. Dosage, frequency, and duration depend on the type and severity of infection, patient age, and body weight.
  • Typical adult oral doses (for reference; your doctor may adjust):
    • Respiratory tract, skin and soft tissue infections: 500 mg once daily for 3 days, or 500 mg on day 1 followed by 250 mg once daily on days 2 to 5.
    • Typhoid fever: 500 mg once daily for 7 days.
    • Uncomplicated gonorrhoea: 2 g as a single dose.
    • Granuloma inguinale: 1 g initial dose, then 500 mg once daily until all lesions have completely healed.
    • Chancroid/Chlamydial urethritis or cervicitis: 1 g as a single dose.
    • Prophylaxis of disseminated MAC infections: 1.2 g once weekly.
    • Treatment or secondary prophylaxis of MAC (with other antimycobacterials): 500 mg once daily.
  • Pediatric dosing: Usually based on body weight (mg/kg) and infection type; must be determined by a pediatrician. Do not calculate or adjust pediatric doses without medical guidance.
  • Administration: Shake the bottle well before each use to ensure uniform suspension.
  • Measure the dose accurately using the provided oral syringe or measuring spoon; do not use household teaspoons.
  • Can generally be taken with or without food; if stomach upset occurs, taking it after food may help. Follow your doctor’s or pharmacist’s advice.
  • Take at the same time each day to maintain consistent blood levels.
  • Complete the full prescribed course even if symptoms improve early, to reduce the risk of recurrence and antibiotic resistance.
  • If a dose is missed, take it as soon as you remember unless it is almost time for the next dose. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one.

Clinical Benefits:

  • Provides broad-spectrum antibacterial activity against many common respiratory, skin, and soft tissue pathogens.
  • Convenient once-daily dosing regimen, which may improve adherence compared with some other antibiotics.
  • Long half-life (approximately 68 hours) allows shorter treatment courses for many infections while maintaining effective tissue levels.
  • Oral suspension form facilitates use in patients who cannot swallow tablets and allows weight-based dosing, especially in children.
  • Helps reduce infection-related symptoms such as fever, sore throat, cough, and local pain or redness when used appropriately.

Warnings & Contraindications:

  • Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to azithromycin, other macrolide or ketolide antibiotics, or any component of the formulation.
  • Use with caution in patients with pre-existing liver disease or hepatic impairment; azithromycin is primarily eliminated by the liver.
  • Use with caution in patients with kidney impairment, significant electrolyte disturbances (especially low potassium or magnesium), or known prolongation of the QT interval.
  • May prolong the QT interval and increase the risk of serious cardiac arrhythmias (including torsades de pointes), particularly in patients with existing heart disease or those taking other QT-prolonging drugs.
  • Use with caution in patients with myasthenia gravis, as macrolides may exacerbate symptoms.
  • Antibiotic-associated diarrhea, including Clostridioides difficile-associated diarrhea, can occur. Persistent or severe diarrhea should be evaluated by a doctor.
  • Do not use for viral infections such as the common cold or influenza, as antibiotics are ineffective against viruses.
  • Consult your doctor before use if pregnant or nursing; azithromycin should be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding only if clearly needed and prescribed.
  • Inform your doctor about all medicines you are taking, including antiarrhythmics, other antibiotics, anticoagulants (e.g., warfarin), antacids, and herbal products, to avoid potential interactions.
  • Not intended for self-medication. Use only under medical supervision and according to local antibiotic stewardship guidelines.
  • Keep out of reach of children.

Side Effects:
  • Common side effects may include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, flatulence, and mild headache.
  • Less common effects can include dizziness, taste disturbances, loss of appetite, or mild skin rash.
  • Serious side effects (seek immediate medical attention) may include severe allergic reactions (rash, itching, swelling of face or throat, difficulty breathing), severe or persistent diarrhea, jaundice or dark urine (signs of liver problems), irregular heartbeat, chest pain, or severe skin reactions.
  • If any unexpected or bothersome symptoms occur, stop the medicine and contact your doctor or pharmacist promptly.
